Description
Kaede Kayano is a student in Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School, introduced as a transfer student who becomes the neighbor and close friend of her classmate, Nagisa Shiota. She is known for her cheerful and supportive demeanor, often helping to assess situations and acting as a supportive presence for her classmates during their assassination attempts against their teacher, Korosensei. Her appearance is marked by her short stature and distinctive light green hair, which she typically styles into two pigtails that are said to resemble cat ears.

Behind her bright exterior lies a much more complex and tragic background. Kayano’s true identity is Akari Yukimura, the younger sister of Aguri Yukimura, who was the class’s former teacher and a key figure in Korosensei’s past. Believing that Korosensei was responsible for her sister’s death, Kayano transferred to Class 3-E under a false identity to exact revenge. To accomplish this, she secretly implanted experimental tentacles into her own body, enduring immense, constant pain for over a year without any medical treatment or revealing her suffering to her peers. Her talent for hiding her true intentions is rooted in her past as a former child prodigy actress, and her entire cheerful persona was, for the most part, a carefully crafted performance to conceal her murderous intent and true self.

Kayano’s primary role in the story is as a student assassin, but this culminates in a significant turning point during the final semester. At the school festival, she reveals her tentacles and her true identity, confronting Korosensei directly to avenge her sister. Despite her carefully laid plans and her abilities, which the mastermind Shiro deemed the most qualified in Class E for assassination, her attack fails. In a critical moment, her close friend Nagisa subdues her using a unique distraction technique, and he helps her understand that her quest for revenge has left her feeling empty. Following this confrontation, her tentacles are removed, and the cheerful personality she had fabricated becomes a genuine part of her character.

Her most important relationship is with Nagisa Shiota, who sits beside her and is her closest friend in the class. It is revealed that Kayano developed romantic feelings for Nagisa, though she chooses to hide them, fearing her confession would distract him from his goals. She is also the student who gave Korosensei his name, and her favorite food is pudding, which she once used as the basis for a creative assassination plan. A recurring comedic trait is her deep-seated complex about her small bust size, which leads to her being given the code name Forever 0.

After her true nature is revealed and her tentacles are removed, Kayano undergoes significant development. The facade she maintained is stripped away, and she returns to a more authentic version of herself, one that integrates the warmth and happiness she experienced while pretending. She reconciles with her past and her motivations, and following the conclusion of the school year and Korosensei’s eventual death, she goes on to pursue a professional acting career, using her prodigious talents on her own terms.
