Description
Itona Horibe is introduced as a transfer student to Kunugigaoka Junior High School's Class 3-E, arriving with the specific objective of assassinating the class's teacher, Koro Sensei. His background is rooted in hardship and a deep-seated desire for power. He is the son of the former president of Horibe Electronics Factory, a small company that manufactured cell phone parts. When the family business was driven into bankruptcy by larger corporations, Itona was left to fend for himself and was subsequently targeted by bullies who labeled him a weakling due to his poverty and homelessness. This traumatic experience instilled in him an intense and obsessive hunger for strength, as well as a profound hatred of losing or being in any position of weakness.

While living on the streets, Itona was discovered by a mysterious man known only as Shiro. Recognizing the boy's tenacity and potential, Shiro took him in and subjected him to experimental procedures. These experiments resulted in several tentacles being grafted onto Itona's head, transforming him into a weapon designed to kill the incredibly powerful Koro Sensei. In his initial appearances, Itona serves as a secondary antagonist, driven solely by the need to prove he is the strongest by defeating Koro Sensei, who he proclaims to be his "brother" to shock and unsettle his target. During this period, his personality is dominated by his obsession with power. He is brutally honest, direct, and dismisses anyone he considers weaker than himself, showing no interest in them. Under the influence of the tentacles, he even mimics some of Koro Sensei's hobbies, such as an interest in gravure magazines and a sweet tooth, further adding to his unsettling nature.

After two failed assassination attempts coordinated by Shiro, the tentacles begin to consume Itona's consciousness and cause a severe rejection reaction that threatens his life. Shiro, deeming him a failure, abandons him. It is at this point that several students from Class 3-E, particularly Ryoma Terasaka and his group, reach out to him. Their willingness to befriend him and Terasaka's insistence that one can still be strong even with weaknesses helps Itona break free from his destructive obsession. Koro Sensei then successfully removes the tentacles, saving his life. Following his rescue, Itona officially joins Class 3-E as a student.

After the tentacles are removed, Itona undergoes a significant personality shift, becoming more mellow, humble, and sociable. While retaining his brutal honesty and a somewhat perverted sense of humor typical of adolescent boys, he learns to admit that others are stronger than him and is willing to cooperate with his classmates as an equal. His traumatic past and his time under Shiro's control also make him an observant individual who can offer unique insight. For instance, when classmate Kaede Kayano is revealed to have tentacles of her own, Itona is able to state from personal experience that she must have endured a great deal of pain to maintain her sanity.

His role in the story evolves from a weaponized antagonist to a valuable member of Class 3-E. Thanks to his background helping with his family's electronics factory, Itona possesses a natural and high-level skill for working with high-tech machinery. He becomes the class's primary "tech guy," building various gadgets, fully automatic stealth drones, and other ingenious devices to aid in their ongoing mission to assassinate Koro Sensei. His intelligence and creativity allow him to excel in his studies, ranking in the top 50 in the second-semester finals, and he proves to be a strong physical asset to the class even without his tentacles. Key relationships that define him include his manipulative former handler Shiro, his savior and teacher Koro Sensei, and his close friends in Class 3-E, especially Ryoma Terasaka and his group who were instrumental in his redemption.

As an implanted human weapon, Itona's abilities were formidable. His tentacles could move independently at incredible speeds, comparable to Koro Sensei, and he wielded a large anti-sensei blade. However, these tentacles sapped a massive amount of energy and required constant maintenance to prevent fatal rejection. After their removal, Itona relies on his natural physical conditioning, which is still above average, and his true talent: his intellect and craftsmanship. He is a gifted mechanic and inventor, creating complex electronics and utilizing the class's anti-sensei materials in his designs. He also continues to wear a large bandana made from an anti-sensei net, which originally served to suppress his tentacles, as a part of his regular attire.
