Movie
Description
Kō Yaten is the civilian identity of Sailor Star Healer, one of the three Sailor Starlights who appear in Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos the Movie. She originates from the planet Kinmoku, which was destroyed by Sailor Galaxia. Along with her companions Kō Seiya and Kō Taiki, she travels to Earth disguised as a male idol in the pop group the Three Lights in order to search for their lost princess, Kakyuu. While on Earth, she enrolls at Juban High School alongside Usagi Tsukino and her friends.
Yaten is characterized by a distant and cynical demeanor. She prefers to keep to herself and focus entirely on her mission, often making sharp-edged and blunt remarks that push others away. She is highly skeptical of humans and wishes to leave Earth as quickly as possible once Princess Kakyuu is found. Despite this cold exterior, she harbors a deep loyalty to her princess and a strong sense of duty. Her personality contrasts with the more outgoing Seiya and the intellectual Taiki, but she works closely with them as part of the Starlights. She also forms an unlikely bond with the cat Luna, who inspires her to keep fighting during difficult moments.
In the story of Cosmos, Yaten and the other Starlights encounter Usagi and reveal themselves as Sailor Guardians. They initially keep their distance from the Earth's Sailor Guardians, believing that Earth is not their responsibility. However, they eventually join forces against the common enemy, Shadow Galactica and its leader Sailor Galaxia. Yaten remains wary of trusting humans, particularly Usagi, and is skeptical of Seiya's growing attachment to her. Despite this, she follows the Starlights' collective decisions and fights alongside Sailor Moon. In the climactic battle at the Galaxy Cauldron, Yaten is killed by Sailor Galaxia's henchwomen Sailor Phi and Sailor Chi, and her Sailor Crystal is stolen. Her death underscores the high stakes of the final conflict.
As Sailor Star Healer, Yaten possesses formidable combat abilities. She wields a pair of golden blades with great precision and efficiency. Like all Sailor Guardians, she draws power from her Sailor Crystal and can perform attacks unique to her role as a healer, though she is also a fierce warrior. Her transformation and attacks are characterized by star-themed motifs, reflecting her status as a Sailor Guardian from a distant star system. In the film, she demonstrates significant strength and determination, holding her own against Shadow Galactica's agents until the end.
Yaten's development in the movie is subtle but meaningful. While she begins as closed-off and mission-driven, her interactions with the other Sailor Guardians and her willingness to fight for a cause greater than her own planet show her capacity for growth. Her ultimate sacrifice underscores her dedication to protecting the universe and her princess. Though her story ends tragically, her role as a Sailor Star Healer leaves a lasting impact on the narrative of Sailor Moon Cosmos.
