Description
Rhisley, the central antagonist in the 1995 film *Lupin III: Farewell to Nostradamus*, commands the Nostradamus Sect, a doomsday cult that amasses followers through the fraudulent claim of owning Nostradamus’s lost prophecies. To cement the sect’s influence, he orchestrates fabricated predictions mirroring real-world crises—including a submarine disaster and the hijacking of a plane carrying Brazil’s national football team—presenting them as divine validation of the cult’s authority. These meticulously staged events manipulate public fear, positioning the sect as humanity’s sole salvation in a world he insists teeters toward annihilation.
His ambitions hinge on seizing the genuine prophecy book concealed within a fortified vault in the Earth Building, owned by U.S. presidential candidate Douglas. Rhisley enlists Chris, a loyalist who kidnaps Douglas’s daughter Julia to coerce the candidate’s withdrawal from the race. Their alliance fractures as Chris pursues personal control of the prophecies, clashing with Rhisley’s grand design to rule through the cult’s global ascendancy. Rhisley’s ruthlessness extends to psychological warfare, employing hypnotic wristbands to implant bombs in unwitting pawns and manipulating Maria, Julia’s mother, to infiltrate Douglas’s trusted circle.
In the film’s climax, Rhisley engineers a mass evacuation of the Earth Building by broadcasting a forged prophecy of its imminent destruction. His plans crumble when Chris betrays him, prematurely detonating explosives that collapse the structure. Attempting escape, Rhisley plunges into a disintegrating elevator shaft, his demise all but assured. A master of deception, he wields charisma to exploit collective dread, yet his empire of lies collapses under the weight of its own artifice, sealing his fate.
