Description
Hideo Kuze is a central figure in the narrative of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG, initially emerging as a prime suspect in Section 9's investigation into the Individual Eleven terrorist group. He is a full-body cyborg, a state he has been in since childhood, and is unique among prostheticized individuals for choosing a sculpted face, which is more difficult to manipulate than a standard prosthetic design and results in his mouth remaining largely motionless when he speaks.

Kuze's background is marked by a tragic event from his early childhood. At the age of six, he was one of only two survivors of a plane crash, the other being a young girl who would later become Motoko Kusanagi. Paralyzed and with only his left arm functional, the young boy spent his time in the hospital folding origami cranes for the comatose girl next to him, hoping for her recovery. After she was taken away for a full cyberization procedure, he believed she had died. He eventually underwent the same procedure and, years later, discovered her abandoned childhood cyborg body in a university laboratory, setting the foundation for a profound, albeit unspoken, connection between them.

As an adult, Kuze served as a peacekeeper for the Japanese Self-Defense Forces during the Peninsular War. He became disillusioned after his platoon liberated a refugee camp from bandits, only to have the soldiers suffer from post-traumatic stress and be vilified by a media that censored the truth of the massacre they had prevented. Disgusted by the hypocrisy of his government and the mistreatment of refugees, he traded his gun for a journalist's camera and disappeared into the refugee camps, documenting the lives of their inhabitants.

Kuze's personality is a complex mix of cold logic and deep-seated empathy. Initially presented as a morally driven, cold-blooded figure, he is later revealed to be a persevering, open, and deeply convincing individual. He is driven by a messianic desire to liberate the oppressed refugee population, yet he struggles with his own humanity after having lived most of his life in a synthetic body. His outlook is philosophical and strategic; he believes that the human heart, like water, flows downhill to its basest instincts, and he sees the physical body as a lower structure from which the ghost must be freed. His core motivation is to lead the refugees not to a physical homeland, but into cyberspace itself, leaving their vulnerable bodies behind to exist as pure consciousness within a vast network.

His primary relationship is with Motoko Kusanagi, the Major. Their connection is rooted in their shared childhood trauma, and Kuze is implied to be the first person she ever loved. Throughout 2nd GIG, this creates a powerful, magnetic tension between them as opposing agents. Kuze is also a mentor and symbolic leader for the refugees of Dejima, who see him as a legendary figure. His foil within Section 9 is Batou, who, while respecting Kuze's strength, is determined to stop his revolutionary plans.

Throughout the story, Kuze develops from a shadowy suspect and survivor of the Individual Eleven's mass suicide into an active, charismatic revolutionary leader. Having isolated himself from the Individual Eleven's controlling virus due to ideological differences, he forges his own path, leveraging his reputation to unite the refugees. His final development occurs when he is trapped under rubble with Kusanagi, where they finally acknowledge their childhood bond. In his final moments, facing assassination by the American Empire, he accepts the destruction of his physical body, implying that his ghost has successfully transferred into the net to "go on ahead," achieving the transcendence he sought for his people.

Kuze possesses several notable abilities. As a former commando, he is a formidable physical combatant, possessing a rare and incredibly durable PKF prosthetic body that grants him immense strength and resilience. He is also a highly skilled strategic genius and a capable hacker, able to defend his cyberbrain from intrusion and, in his final scheme, network the consciousness of millions of refugees. His most defining characteristic, however, may be his unyielding willpower and his ability to inspire unwavering loyalty through his quiet conviction and ideological clarity.
