Description
Armin Arlert is introduced as a childhood friend of Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman, having grown up with them in the Shiganshina District of Wall Maria. His early life was shaped by the teachings of his grandfather, who showed him a forbidden book about the outside world. This book ignited in Armin a deep and abiding fascination with what lay beyond the walls, including visions of oceans of salt water, lands of ice, and fields of fire. Following the breach of Wall Maria by the Colossal Titan, Armin lost his parents during a subsequent mission to retake the lost territory. He, along with Eren and Mikasa, survived as refugees and eventually enlisted in the 104th Training Corps.

In terms of personality, Armin initially presents as gentle, introverted, and deeply insecure, often viewing himself as a burden to his more physically capable friends who frequently protected him from bullies. However, this timid exterior belies a powerful and determined inner core. Armin is defined by his exceptional intelligence, profound curiosity, and a strong sense of empathy. As the story progresses, he overcomes much of his self-doubt, growing into a brave and decisive individual. He develops a pragmatic and morally complex worldview, believing that one cannot change anything without being willing to sacrifice something of value. He rejects the concept of absolute good or evil, viewing such labels as subjective and dependent on one's perspective. This allows him to devise morally difficult strategies, such as emotionally manipulating an enemy, while still being deeply affected by the loss of life his actions cause, including that of civilians and children.

Armin's primary motivation stems from his lifelong dream to explore the world outside the walls, a desire he shared with Eren. He is driven not only by personal curiosity but also by a desire to understand the world and find a peaceful resolution to the conflicts that plague humanity, even when such a path seems impossible. His role in the story is that of the primary strategist and the intellectual core of the Survey Corps. He is frequently the one to analyze complex situations, deduce enemy identities and plans, and formulate the tactics that lead to victory in pivotal battles. He successfully identified Annie Leonhart as the Female Titan, devised the plan to seal the breach in Trost District using Eren's Titan power, and created the strategy that allowed for the recapture of Shiganshina District. During the final battle for Shiganshina, Armin sacrificed himself as a decoy against the Colossal Titan, suffering near-fatal burns. He was later revived by Captain Levi, who chose to use a Titan serum on Armin rather than on Commander Erwin Smith. This led Armin to inherit the power of the Colossal Titan by consuming Bertholdt Hoover. Following the death of Hange Zoë, Armin was named the 15th commander of the Survey Corps.

Armin's key relationships are central to his development. His bond with Eren and Mikasa is the most significant. He shares a profound trust and a shared dream with Eren, even as their ideologies violently clash later in the story, with Armin ultimately leading an alliance to stop Eren's genocidal Rumbling. His relationship with Mikasa is one of deep mutual care and reliance, with both often supporting each other emotionally and in battle. He also develops a complex relationship with Annie Leonhart; after inheriting Bertholdt's memories, his empathy for her grows, and he regularly visits her crystallized form. He shares a strong sense of fellowship with his fellow trainees, including Jean Kirstein, Connie Springer, and Sasha Blouse, who come to respect and trust his strategic judgment implicitly.

Armin's character development is one of the most pronounced in the narrative. He transforms from a physically weak and self-loathing child who relies on others for protection into a confident leader and a world-saving hero. He grapples with immense survivor's guilt, first over being chosen to live instead of Erwin, and later over the actions he must take as a soldier and Titan shifter. His journey forces him to confront the harsh realities of the world, moving from an idealistic dreamer to a pragmatic leader who nonetheless strives to retain his humanity and find a path to peace.

In terms of notable abilities, Armin's greatest asset is his genius-level intellect. He possesses outstanding judgment, observational skills, and the ability to devise complex strategic plans under extreme pressure. While his physical strength, martial arts, and skills with vertical maneuvering equipment are below average for a soldier, they are still sufficient for him to function effectively in combat. After inheriting the Colossal Titan, he gains the ability to transform into a sixty-meter-tall Titan, a power that comes with its own set of unique abilities. These include generating a massive, explosive transformation capable of leveling a harbor and emitting scalding hot steam from his Titan body as both a defensive and offensive measure. As a Titan shifter, he also possesses a potent healing factor, allowing him to regenerate from severe injuries.
