Description
Kanetatsu Naoe is a key character from the Uesugi samurai alliance. Despite his youthful and boyish appearance, which is accentuated by his short stature of 150 centimeters, he is actually 26 years old. He has light purple hair styled in a bowl cut with a long fringe that often covers his golden eyes. His body is marked by extensive dragon-themed tattoos, including a prominent one on the left side of his forehead. These tattoos are widely believed to be a mark of pride, representing the dragon character in his name that was bestowed upon him by his lord. In truth, they serve as a form of atonement; the tattoo over his left eye mirrors a scar sustained by his master, and he bears them as a self-imposed punishment for past failures on the battlefield where comrades were lost or injured.

In personality, Kanetatsu is exacting, disciplined, and deeply committed to order. He values precision and dislikes any form of vagueness or disorganization, often reacting sharply to subordinates who use ambiguous language or fail to maintain proper formation. While he can be a fierce and inspiring leader in combat, he typically presents a calm, courteous, and meticulous demeanor, diligently handling administrative tasks as the head of finance for the Uesugi. However, this reserved nature falls away when he drinks alcohol; he becomes belligerent and experiences memory loss the following day. He leads an extremely frugal and poor life, choosing to live in an abandoned house in the poorest district of Shiryu Castle. This austerity stems from his desire to see the people prosper over himself and his sense of duty as the finance minister. His extreme poverty and demanding personality have led to him divorcing seven times.

Kanetatsu is driven by a profound sense of loyalty to Tatsuomi Uesugi, the leader of the Uesugi samurai, and a powerful sense of responsibility for the safety of his comrades. He carries a heavy burden of guilt from past battles where his fellow warriors were killed or injured, believing it was his fault. This has led him to feel excessive responsibility and pressure, as he is revered by his people as the Dragon God, an invincible hero. His primary motivation is to live up to that expectation and the trust placed in him by Tatsuomi, whom he is fiercely devoted to protecting. He refuses awards or high-ranking positions, accepting only the dragon character in his name as the most minimal form of praise from his lord.

Within the story of Orient, Kanetatsu serves as a high-ranking executive officer and a general of the first squad of the Uesugi samurai. He is recognized as one of the three strongest dragons in the Uesugi forces and their strongest swordsman. He initially appears as an obstacle to the main characters, preventing them from meeting with Tatsuomi. His role expands significantly during the Awaji Island Recapture Operation, where his tactical brilliance and combat strength become crucial. Despite looking like an ordinary civil servant as he handles paperwork, he is a formidable warrior on the battlefield. His leadership and power are instrumental in key battles, including a major confrontation against an enemy named Seiroku Inukawa, whom he defeats by shattering his blade to break a debilitating technique.

His most important relationship is with his lord, Tatsuomi Uesugi. He is deeply loyal and trusted completely, to the point where Tatsuomi gives him direct commands and believes in his victory without question. Another key relationship is with the strategist Kuroko Usami, as he works alongside her to execute battle plans. He also interacts with the main protagonist, Musashi, initially treating him with skepticism and criticism, deeming him too weak as a samurai, but eventually cooperating with him. Among his comrades, his frugality and failed marriages are a source of gag humor, with others making remarks that explain why his wives keep leaving him.

Kanetatsu undergoes subtle yet significant development, primarily through the revelation of his internal burdens. His seemingly perfect and proud exterior as an invincible hero is revealed to mask deep-seated guilt and a punishing sense of atonement for his perceived failures. His decision to cut his own hand and endure immense pain during his fight with Seiroku demonstrates his willingness to sacrifice himself to fulfill his duty. In this battle, he directly confronts the weight of his comrades expectations, declaring that for him, that pressure is his greatest pride, showing that his devotion stems from more than just duty, but a personal conviction.

As a warrior, Kanetatsu is exceptionally powerful. He wields a Kitetsu blade of the red path, which is characterized by immense destructive power but at a limited range. His signature technique is called Ryusa Retsujinto, translated as Dragon Chain Slashing Blade. This ability allows him to summon searing chains from his sword that can bind and restrain multiple enemies, allowing him to defeat a hundred oni in a single attack by lining them up and cutting their horns. In battle, he is a brick swordsman capable of flying and using his chains for both offense and area control. His fighting style is direct and powerful, reflecting his philosophy of bringing order to the chaos of the battlefield.
