Description
Cosmo Imai is a prominent fighter in the Kengan Annihilation Tournament, known as "The King of Stranglers" and recognized as a prodigy in the underground fighting world. At just 19 years old during the main events of the tournament, Cosmo stands 171 centimeters tall and weighs 68 kilograms, making him one of the smaller participants, yet his fighting prowess is considered exceptional.

Cosmo's entry into martial arts began during a turbulent childhood. As a young boy, he was constantly getting into street fights until he met Mitsuyo Kureishi, a mixed martial artist who offered to properly train him. Cosmo proved to be a natural talent, learning with remarkable speed and adaptability. His skills became so evident that when a businessman named Akira Nishihonji sought to recruit Kureishi as a fighter for his security company, Kureishi instead recommended the young Cosmo. At only 14 years old, Cosmo became the youngest person ever to debut in the Kengan matches, immediately submitting a much larger opponent who was 20 centimeters taller and 30 kilograms heavier.

In terms of personality, Cosmo is characterized as happy-go-lucky, cheerful, and almost always smiling. He was described as a social butterfly during his school years, maintaining friendships across different social circles. This friendliness extends to the fighting community, as he easily gets along with other fighters and has been known to approach opponents after matches to offer congratulations or thanks, even following brutal fights against individuals who aimed to do him serious harm. He is a quick learner, flexible, and adaptable both in combat and in social situations.

Despite his cheerful exterior, Cosmo shares the intense bloodlust and desire for combat common among Kengan fighters. However, a critical moment of self-realization occurs during his near-death fight against Akoya Seishu. While on the verge of losing consciousness, Cosmo comes to understand that his true motivation is not a love of fighting itself, but rather an intense and driving desire to win. This revelation gives him the psychological strength to push past his limits and secure victory. He has a noted personal quirk of having a weakness for older, more mature women, which can make him shy when surrounded by them.

Cosmo represents Nishihonji Security Services in the Kengan Annihilation Tournament. In the first round, he faces the powerful American fighter Adam Dudley. Though he emerges victorious, he sustains significant injuries including cracked forearms and full body contusions. The second round pits him against Akoya Seishu, a sadistic fighter with superhuman reflexes who operates under his own twisted sense of justice. This fight pushes Cosmo to his absolute limits, as Akoya deliberately inflicts severe damage, breaking Cosmo's ribs and nearly killing him. Cosmo ultimately wins using his unique Zone technique, but is left with crushed ribs, ruptured organs, a broken wrist and collarbone, a cracked spine, and internal bleeding. Despite these catastrophic injuries, Cosmo attempts to shake Akoya's hand after the match, demonstrating his remarkable sportsmanship and respect for opponents. After recovering enough to leave a wheelchair, he defends his position against Okubo Naoya to continue fighting in the tournament. In the third round, he faces the protagonist Tokita Ohma. Both fighters are badly injured at this point, and despite Cosmo initially dominating the match and draining much of Ohma's stamina using his newly developed foresight ability, he ultimately suffers his first recorded loss when Ohma uses the Water Mirror technique to strangle Cosmo with his own arm.

Several key relationships shape Cosmo's journey. His teacher Mitsuyo Kureishi remains an important figure, and Cosmo's goal of surpassing him drives much of his dedication to fighting. He shares a close bond with his employer Akira Nishihonji, whom he affectionately calls his "bro." After their first-round fight, Cosmo and Adam Dudley become friends and training partners, with Adam showing genuine concern for Cosmo's well-being following his injuries. He also looks up to Wakatsuki Takeshi as a senior figure. These relationships demonstrate Cosmo's ability to form genuine connections even within the inherently violent context of underground fighting.

Throughout the tournament, Cosmo undergoes significant development as a fighter and as a person. He begins as a naturally talented grappler who enjoys combat, but through his near-death experience with Akoya, he discovers that his true passion is for winning, not merely fighting. This psychological evolution is accompanied by technical growth. He learns to read his opponents' moves, developing an ability called Foresight that allows him to predict one or two moves ahead, though this prediction can be disrupted when encountering entirely new techniques. His willpower is extraordinary, as he consistently fights through injuries that would incapacitate most individuals and continues pushing forward when adrenaline takes over.

Cosmo's notable abilities center primarily on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and strangulation techniques. His signature ability is the Zone, a timing-based counter technique unique to him. The Zone exploits the 0.1-second interval when an opponent is completely focused on launching an attack, allowing Cosmo to move into their blind spot and apply a hold before they can react. This technique creates the illusion that Cosmo has vanished into thin air. Among his favored holds are the Triangle Choke, which traps an opponent's neck and arm with his legs, the Scissor Throw for taking down larger opponents, and the Python Hold, a rear-naked choke that can render an opponent unconscious in approximately seven seconds by cutting off blood flow to the brain. Despite his grappling specialization, Cosmo is also accomplished in striking and can employ misdirections and feints effectively. He possesses superhuman reflexes bordering on precognition, and his endurance is remarkable, as demonstrated by fighting three matches per day for two months straight and winning all of them prior to the tournament. Cosmo Imai remains a standout character who proves that size and brute strength can be overcome by technique, intelligence, and the unwavering will to win.
