Description
Luna Kozuki is a central human character in the 1993 original video animation Casshan: Robot Hunter. She is the fifteen-year-old daughter of Dr. Kozuki, a scientist who, like the father of her childhood friend Tetsuya Azuma, was involved in advanced robotics research. In the story’s post-apocalyptic setting, where a rogue robot army led by the android Buraiking Boss has enslaved much of humanity, Luna joins the human resistance and fights alongside Tetsuya, who has transformed himself into the android hero Casshan, and his robotic dog Friender.
Her defining motivation is the survival and liberation of humankind. She is portrayed as courageous and determined, willing to risk her life to deliver weapon plans and organize revolts among enslaved workers. Despite the grim world, she retains an optimistic and compassionate nature, which contrasts with Casshan’s growing internal struggle over his lost humanity. Luna’s role is pivotal as a link between the scattered human resistance and Casshan himself; she often serves as his emotional anchor, reminding him of the people he fights for.
She wields the MF Gun, a powerful handheld electromagnetic weapon invented by her father. This firearm is capable of destroying enemy robots and makes her an effective combatant, though she is not superhuman like Casshan. Her bravery in battle and willingness to stand beside him, even when he urges her to flee, demonstrates her loyalty and resolve.
Her key relationships are with Tetsuya Azuma, whom she loves and who reciprocates her feelings, and with her father, Dr. Kozuki, whose scientific legacy provides the tools for the resistance. She also interacts with other resistance fighters, including Admiral Rudolph, and faces betrayal and capture during the story. Over the course of the four-episode OVA, Luna develops from a hopeful but somewhat sheltered young woman into a hardened fighter who must witness Casshan’s final sacrifice to defeat the Black King. Her own survival at the end symbolizes the future humanity can rebuild.
Notably, she has no superhuman abilities but relies on her intelligence, courage, and the MF Gun. Her background as a scientist’s daughter gives her technical insight, and her emotional strength allows her to endure loss and continue fighting. In the original 1973 series Neo-Human Casshern, she is similarly a human resistance fighter and love interest of Casshan, though the OVA deepens her involvement in the conflict.
