Mylene Hoffman, known by her codename 009-1, is the central protagonist of the anime 009-1: The End of the Beginning. She is a cyborg secret agent operating within the all-female Nine Number Group, one of the ten divisions of the Zero Zero Organization, a Western Bloc intelligence body. Her origin is rooted in a traumatic childhood: as a young girl, she defected from the Eastern Bloc alongside her parents and brother, but their group was attacked, leaving her the sole survivor. A member of the Zero Zero Organization rescued her, and she later chose to join the organization, eventually undergoing extensive cybernetic modification to become its most capable operative.
Her personality is marked by a calm, clear-minded professionalism, yet she is capable of emotional depth and moral judgment, as seen when she spares a mutant child who reflects others' intentions. She is also willing to use seduction and lethal force when missions demand it.
