Description
Asami Oikawa is a secondary character in the story, introduced as a classmate and friend of the protagonist, Mei Tachibana. She is a sixteen-year-old student at Toumei High School, recognizable by her chest-length auburn hair, which she often styles into low pigtails or a ponytail, and her dark olive eyes. Standing at 155 centimeters tall, Asami has a slender but noticeably curvaceous figure, a physical trait that significantly influences her early experiences and insecurities.
Asami’s personality is defined by a warm, friendly, and outgoing nature. She is honest with her friends and actively seeks to connect with others, which is how she befriends the initially withdrawn Mei. Despite facing frequent objectification and cruel nicknames like Melon Monster from male classmates who focus solely on her large breasts, Asami rarely shows her hurt. Instead, she typically responds with a smile, demonstrating a resilient and strong-willed character that masks deeper feelings of insecurity. Her central motivation is a desire for genuine affection and to be liked for who she is on the inside, not for her physical appearance.
In the story, Asami serves as a supportive and loyal friend, particularly to Mei. She plays a key role in helping Mei come out of her shell and improve her social life. A significant part of her personal narrative involves her relationship with Kenji Nakanishi, a male classmate who initially teases her about her chest. After a push from Mei, Kenji confesses his true feelings for Asami, stating he loves her for her smile and personality, which she happily accepts. Their relationship faces challenges, including a misunderstanding where Kenji cancels a date, but they eventually reconcile. In the long term, Asami and Kenji marry and have a child.
Asami's key relationships are central to her development. Her friendship with Mei Tachibana is particularly strong; Asami buys matching cell phone straps for them and fiercely defends Mei against attempts by the manipulative Megumi Kitagawa to isolate her, stating she will never leave Mei. Mei also stands up for Asami when she is bullied. Asami also shares a close friendship with Aiko Mutō. Her history with Yamato Kurosawa is more complex; she idolized him after he defended her from teasing in middle school and briefly had a crush on him. However, she realized his feelings were not genuine after he kissed her casually, and she eventually supports his relationship with Mei. Beyond her main circle, Asami shows great kindness to Megumi Kitagawa, carrying her desk inside after other students had put it outside as a form of bullying, an act that helps Megumi begin to change her own behavior.
Throughout the story, Asami demonstrates notable personal growth. She moves from being a girl deeply insecure about her body and desperate for a prince to save her, to a confident young woman in a sincere, committed relationship. She learns to value herself and is able to form deep, loyal friendships. Following high school, Asami pursues a career in early childhood education, a path she shares with her friend Mei.
