Description
Kenji Nakanishi is a supporting character in the anime Say "I love you." He is a 17-year-old student and classmate of the protagonist, Mei Tachibana, attending Toumei High School. Standing 172 centimeters tall, Kenji is known for his distinctive messy light brown hair and chocolate brown eyes. His primary and most significant role in the story is as the close friend of the male lead, Yamato Kurosawa.
Kenji's personality is initially defined by a combination of immaturity and impulsiveness. He has a pronounced perverted streak, frequently making lewd comments and openly ogling his female classmates, with a particular focus on Asami Oikawa's figure. This behavior manifests in inappropriate pranks, most notably an early incident where he attempts to lift Mei's skirt on the school staircase. This action inadvertently causes Mei to react by spinning around and kicking, which accidentally strikes Yamato and sends him tumbling down the stairs. His motivations often center on seeking amusement for himself and trying to make his friend Yamato laugh, sometimes without considering the consequences for others.
Despite his crude exterior, Kenji's nature is portrayed as fundamentally well-meaning. He is capable of recognizing when he has crossed a line and will offer genuine apologies. He serves a key role as the comic relief within the main group of friends, providing lighter moments through his antics and failed attempts to be smooth. His loyalty to Yamato is unwavering, and while he sometimes uses his popular friend's status to get closer to girls, he remains observant of the sincerity in others' actions. He initially dislikes Mei, viewing her as standoffish, but eventually befriends her and comes to appreciate her honest and forthright nature.
Kenji's most significant narrative arc revolves around his relationship with Asami Oikawa. His initial attraction to her is superficial, almost entirely focused on her physical appearance. However, as he gets to know her, his feelings evolve into genuine affection for her personality. At a crucial moment, it is Mei who advises Kenji to confess his honest feelings directly to Asami. Following this advice, he drops his immature posturing and admits his true emotions, which leads to the start of a happy, committed, and affectionate romantic relationship that lasts throughout the series. This development marks his primary character growth, transitioning him from a one-note comedic pervert to a young man capable of sincere commitment and emotional vulnerability. His relationship with Asami also shows a softer, more loyal side of his personality that was previously hidden behind his juvenile behavior.
In terms of abilities, Kenji does not possess any special talents or skills relevant to the plot. His defining attributes are his role as a loyal friend and his personal journey from shallow immaturity to a more genuine romantic partner.
