Description
The Kokeshi Dolls in As the Gods Will are a group of animated wooden figures based on traditional Japanese kokeshi craft, serving as the enforcers of the deadly Kagome Kagome death game. Each doll in the group has a distinct painted design, a name, and a unique personality reflected through its voice. Daigorou speaks with a sarcastic, husky voice and frequently hurls cruel insults at the players, while Kobayashi is high-pitched and talkative, being the most vocal member of the group.

These dolls appear in the room of the protagonist, Shun Takahata, to administer their trial. The game requires a blindfolded student to sit in the center of a circle formed by the floating dolls. The dolls circle the student, singing a traditional song. When the song stops, the student must correctly identify which doll is directly behind them. A wrong answer results in instant death, typically caused by a red laser projected from the doll's mouth or by telekinesis. Daigorou specifically kills the student Mikami, while Kobayashi kills the student Yuu. If the students succeed in their guesses, the dolls accept the loss without violence and one of them reveals a key that opens the door to the next stage.

Their primary motivation is to strictly follow the rules set by the higher gods, conducting the game with absolute authority and showing no mercy. They find amusement in the suffering of their victims and maintain a strong collective unity, operating in perfect coordination. The dolls have a purely adversarial relationship with the students, though they interact with respect for the game's structure.

There is little personal development for the dolls, as they remain static obstacles of judgment within the narrative. However, their willingness to depart peacefully after a loss demonstrates a rigid adherence to the game's outcome. Their notable abilities include flight, telekinetic control over their movements and objects, synchronized singing, the capacity to fire lethal energy beams, and complete knowledge of the rules governing their specific trial. Their wooden construction provides them with considerable resistance to physical harm. Once their game concludes, Daigorou, Kobayashi, and the rest of the dolls depart together, their role in the trial finished.
