TV-Series
Description
Kanetsugu Gasō is a secondary character in the Masamune-kun's Revenge series, introduced as a significant obstacle in the protagonist's path. Born on July 1st, she is a sixteen or seventeen-year-old student at Yasaka High School, standing at 160 centimeters tall. While she initially presents herself as a boy, Kanetsugu is in fact a young woman. To maintain this masculine disguise, she binds her chest with bandages and wears loose-fitting clothing. Her appearance is noted for having black hair and a slightly overweight or pudgy frame, which includes round cheeks and a rounded stomach. This physique is a key element of her deception, as it makes her resemble the childhood appearance of the real Masamune Makabe.
Kanetsugu comes from the Gasō family, which was once wealthy but has since fallen into significant financial ruin. As the eldest daughter, she feels a profound sense of responsibility for her family, particularly for her younger sister, Sumire Gasō. It is this desperation to secure funds and provide a better future for her sister that drives her primary motivation. To achieve this, she devises and executes a plan to take advantage of a childhood promise made by their grandfathers, approaching the wealthy Adagaki family. She presents herself as the long-lost Masamune, a boy Aki Adagaki loved in her childhood and has been waiting to reunite with. Her goal is to receive financial support from the Adagaki family by posing as Aki's fiancé, a scheme she is fully conscious of and determined to see through.
In terms of personality, Kanetsugu is highly cunning and deceitful. She is a skilled liar who is capable of manipulating those around her to achieve her aims. For example, she successfully convinces the student council, a group of Aki's admirers, that she is innocent and that Masamune Makabe is the one with indecent intentions toward Aki. She is ambitious and primarily indifferent to the feelings of others, although this indifference does not extend to her own family. Kanetsugu is fully aware that she is toying with Aki's emotions, as she has no genuine romantic interest in her, yet she continues her deception without remorse. Her worldview and actions are heavily influenced by her desire to restore her family's fortune, making her willing to go to great lengths, including fraud, to achieve financial stability. Despite her antagonistic role, her motivations are rooted in love for her sister and desperation, which adds a layer of complexity to her character. She shares an intense fear of bugs with her rival, Masamune Makabe.
Within the story, Kanetsugu serves as the false Masamune. Her arrival derails the revenge plan of the real Masamune Makabe, as Aki quickly accepts Kanetsugu as her childhood love due to her physical resemblance and knowledge of the past. This creates a direct and intense rivalry between Kanetsugu and Masamune, who sees her as an impostor threatening his mission. Her primary relationship is with Aki Adagaki, whom she deceives for financial gain. Aki develops genuine feelings for Kanetsugu, believing her to be her first love, which makes the eventual revelation of the truth more painful. Kanetsugu also threatens and attempts to neutralize Yoshino Koiwai, Aki's maid, to prevent her from interfering with the scheme. Her sister, Sumire, is a pivotal figure in her life, representing the person she is fighting to protect, and her hospitalization is used as a reason to request more money from the Adagaki family.
Kanetsugu undergoes a significant transformation after her deception is exposed. The truth comes to light during a trip to an amusement park, where Masamune punches her and reveals his identity, and Aki notices her feminine body. Following her failure, she sells the Gasō mansion and all related assets. She returns the money she received from the Adagaki family and, with the school's consideration, takes a part-time job selling bread in the school cafeteria. She moves into an apartment where she lives happily with her sister, Sumire, having successfully escaped the pressures of maintaining the facade of wealth. She stops binding her chest and, upon advancing to her third year of high school, begins wearing the standard female school uniform, fully embracing her identity as a young woman. In this new chapter of her life, she even teases Masamune, jokingly telling him to take responsibility and marry her, showing that she has become a more lighthearted and content individual. Beyond her primary talent for deception and acting, she has no special abilities, but her intelligence in orchestrating the scheme and manipulating those around her serves as her primary tool throughout the story.
