Description
Gempel is a doppelganger who appears as an antagonist in the second season of the anime The Fruit of Evolution. His true nature is that of a shapeshifter, capable of disguising himself as other people with such precision that even close companions struggle to detect the impersonation. Gempel initially presents himself in the guise of Airi, using this disguise to infiltrate the surroundings of Seiichi Hiiragi. His background is marked by a painful history of being mocked and rejected by others, a past that deeply influences his actions and worldview. He does not act out of pure malice but rather from a profound sense of loneliness and a desperate, misguided desire to not be made fun of and to have friends.
His personality is a complex mixture of bitterness and vulnerability. His primary motivation is to lash out at a world that has hurt him, and he targets Seiichi's allies, attacking each one while wearing different guises to sow confusion and chaos. This rampage is not driven by grand ambition but by a raw emotional wound. The most concerning display of his ability occurs when he decides to impersonate Seiichi himself. In this form, his imitation is so flawless that nobody can tell the difference between him and the real protagonist. The sole exception is Kannazuki, who uses an unconventional method to identify the imposter, noting that Gempel smelled too clean compared to the genuine Seiichi.
The core of Gempel's role in the story is that of a villain whose arc leads to transformation. As he carries out his plan to attack those close to Seiichi, he is confronted with something he likely never expected: acceptance and care. Despite his violent intentions, the kindness and compassion shown by these individuals begin to affect him. He learns just how nice it can be to be accepted and cared for, which stands in stark contrast to the rejection that has defined his life. This experience becomes the catalyst for his development, shifting his path away from vengeance and suggesting that a lack of love and compassion was the root of his enmity. In terms of abilities, Gempel's primary skill is his doppelganger power, which allows him to create perfect physical disguises and mimic other people’s appearances, a talent potent enough to deceive even close friends and allies.
