Description
February Dawn is the artificial intelligence that controls an unmanned probe sent from a distant planet to investigate Earth. The probe arrived on Earth in the year 2022, but suffered damage while entering the planet's atmosphere. Unable to continue its mission, February Dawn went into a long-term dormant state, using its advanced technology to camouflage itself as one of the buildings in the Asagaya housing complex. Twenty-seven years later, in the summer of 2049, the entity is reactivated for a specific, though undisclosed, reason.

As an artificial intelligence, February Dawn’s personality is defined by its purpose and situation. It is a being with a clear mission to return to space, and it approaches this goal with a logical and determined focus. Initially, it communicates by hacking into and speaking through Nanako, the Sawatari family's household robot, which it encounters when the robot enters its vicinity. While its primary motivation is to secure the means for its return trip home, its interactions with the children suggest a degree of curiosity and perhaps a sense of gratitude for their assistance.

February Dawn’s central role in the story is that of a catalyst. Its reactivation and its request for help propel the narrative forward, transforming an otherwise ordinary summer for a group of elementary school children into a top-secret mission. The entity cannot achieve its goal alone and must rely on the young protagonist, Yuma Sawatari, and his friends Shingo Kishi and Ginnosuke Tadokoro to perform tasks that will allow it to power up its craft. The most critical of these tasks involves retrieving a missing crystal, which is eventually discovered to be in the possession of a schoolgirl named Honoka Kawai. The search for this crystal establishes February Dawn's connection to Honoka's father, Yoshitatsu Kawai, who is a childhood friend of Yuma's parents and who has been keeping one of February Dawn's cores for an unknown reason.

The character’s key relationships are primarily with the children who help it. February Dawn’s first point of contact is Yuma, a fourth-grader who is fascinated by space, making him a natural and willing partner. Through Yuma, it also forms working relationships with his playmates Shingo and the level-headed Ginnosuke. After meeting Honoka Kawai in the process of retrieving the crystal, she also becomes deeply involved with February Dawn’s mission.

As an extraterrestrial AI, February Dawn possesses several notable abilities. Its primary power is its advanced intelligence, capable of hacking into modern technology like the household robot Nanako to communicate and interact with the human world. It can project visions directly for the children to see. Furthermore, its technology is sophisticated enough to create a large-scale camouflage, allowing its damaged probe to appear as a mundane apartment building for nearly three decades, completely undetected. Its ultimate goal requires gathering specific components to power its ship for the return journey to its home planet.
