Description
Kana Kawamoto, also known as Kana-bun to her friends, is a central character in FLCL: Shoegaze, having previously been the protagonist of FLCL: Alternative. By the events of Shoegaze, which takes place ten years later, she is 27 years old and works for the Bureau of Interstellar Immigration under Chief Tsukata Kanda.

Her background reveals a significant shift in her life trajectory. After high school, she trained as a nurse and had graduated, but she was recruited by Kanda for a top-secret project before she could begin working in the medical field professionally. At the age of 20, she was brought into a project that aimed to use her N.O. powers to power up Tsuganei Tower, which was designed to act like a massive brain to amplify her abilities. Kanda convinced her to participate by telling her she could return the world to its previous state and become a hero. However, over four years of experiments, Kana's N.O. powers grew weaker instead of stronger, failing to reach the necessary levels.

In Shoegaze, Kana has become more serious and somewhat bitter compared to her energetic and enthusiastic younger self. She expresses frustration about being called in on her day off and missing personal appointments, only to be reminded that there are no days off in her line of work. While others remind her that she saved the world a decade prior, she quickly deflects this, crediting a pink-haired woman with a guitar instead. Her bitterness stems from the burden of expectations placed upon her; she yells that because people believed she would do big things, she was saddled with responsibilities she was not prepared for. She also reveals that all her friends had abandoned her after the events of Alternative, with Pets leaving for Mars and others moving away. Despite these regrets and hardships, she remains willing to keep moving forward in life.

Her role in the story is as an agent brought in to assist with a crisis when two teenagers, Masaki and Harumi, barricade themselves inside Tsuganei Tower. She acts as a negotiator and an adult authority figure, but her connection to the tower's mysterious powers makes her essential to understanding the events unfolding.

Key relationships define her past and present. Her friendship with Tomomi "Pets" Hetada is particularly significant and painful. Pets was Kana's first and best friend, but their relationship ended acrimoniously when Pets lashed out at Kana for being nosy and selfish, accusing her of inserting herself into others' problems without permission. In Shoegaze, despite the hurt, Kana still misses Pets and has been writing her letters that she keeps in her car, with no way to send them to Mars. Her relationship with Tsukata Kanda is professional and complex; he recruited her for the project and has kept a security detail following her for over a decade, which she regularly asks him to remove.

Kana's development from a teenager to an adult is a central theme. Her younger self was hyper-emotional, struggled with self-esteem, and was infatuated with the idea of maturity without yet achieving it. She would project her ideas onto her friends, trying to fix their problems as a way of dealing with her own lack of direction. As an adult, she has been forced to confront the consequences of her choices and the loneliness that followed her youthful idealism.

Regarding notable abilities, Kana possesses N.O. powers, which are channels in her head that can produce objects from elsewhere. In her youth, her N.O. was exceptionally powerful, capable of creating a space-time rift known as the Naked Focal Point that consumed a Medical Mechanica iron. By the time of Shoegaze, however, her abilities have significantly weakened to the point where she can no longer even sprout the small pink flower from her forehead that once signaled her power. Instead, she relies on her training, and she uses her medical knowledge to save another character after they are shot. She is also shown to be a skillful driver. Her appearance in Shoegaze is professional business attire: a dark blazer and pants with a white dress shirt and black pumps. She sports a bandage on her forehead, which she explains is to cover a bump from drinking too much the night before, rather than a connection to her N.O. abilities.
