TV-Series
Description
Orinoko is a fifteen-year-old girl and one of the three central characters of FLCL: Grunge, with the final episode of the series told from her point of view. She lives in the decaying town of Okura, where a Medical Mechanica plant has gradually ruined the atmosphere and driven many wealthier residents to leave the planet on interstellar shuttles. Before the local high school closed, she was one of only three remaining students, alongside Shinpachi and Shonari. Like the other young people in the town, she has grown up treating the decline and poverty around her as ordinary circumstances, with little expectation that her future will be any different.

Her background is rooted in her family's trade. Her mother is deceased, and Orinoko spends her days scavenging the surrounding mountains and a junk-filled crater for scrap metal and usable parts to bring to her father, the town's last remaining bladesmith. His skill has weakened along with the town's fortunes, and Orinoko works beside him at the blacksmith forge to keep the family craft alive. The workshop also contains an assistant robot that her father treats as though it were her late mother, an arrangement that carries quiet emotional weight throughout her story.

Her main motivation is supporting her father's work. She shows clear frustration when her searches fail to turn up iron ore, yet she remains practical and industrious, repeatedly heading out to find the materials the forge needs. Her actions also reveal a generous and caring nature. When she meets Haruko, who is trying to repair her Vespa, Orinoko gives her some of the parts she has collected, and Haruko later repays her with a whetstone for sharpening blades. She crafts a plain but sturdy knife for Shinpachi, who pays her five thousand yen for it. After Shonari gives her a magnetic speaker to improve her search for ore, she uses it to locate meteoric material, and she, her father, and the robot work together to forge a sword from it. When she hands the finished katana to Shonari, she tells him to use it to protect the people he loves, showing her concern for those close to her.

Her role in the story ties the three main characters together through her craftsmanship. The knife she makes becomes part of Shinpachi's story, while the katana she forges becomes central to Shonari's arc and his actions during the mob war that erupts in Okura. Her encounter with Haruko also places her within the larger events set in motion by Haruko's schemes, though Orinoko herself remains removed from the violence and instead experiences the chaos from the perspective of someone trying to preserve her family and home.

Her development reaches its emotional conclusion when the Medical Mechanica plant begins moving toward the forge. As the assistant robot starts to shut down, Orinoko learns that it actually houses her mother's memories. She takes a backup disc from the robot and escapes just before the forge collapses under the plant's arrival. Later, after Haruko uses Shinpachi's N.O. portal and Shonari's katana to pull out a Rickenbacker 4001 guitar and destroy the plant's giant robot, Haruko gives the last of the stolen shuttle tickets to the three of them. Shinpachi and Shonari choose to stay behind, allowing Orinoko to use the ticket on the final interstellar shuttle leaving the planet, making her the only one of the trio to escape Okura.

Her notable abilities are practical rather than combative. She is a resourceful scavenger who knows how to find scrap and ore in the mountains and in the junk-filled crater, and she is a capable apprentice smith who contributes directly to the forging of both the knife and the katana. Her decision to salvage the backup disc from the robot also demonstrates her quick thinking and her attachment to what remains of her family, even as she loses her home.
