Description
Haruki Yamauchi is a student in Class 1-D at the Advanced Nurturing High School. He is recognized as one of the "Three Idiots of Class D," a trio that includes his close friends, Ken Sudō and Kanji Ike. His student ID is S01T004706, and his birthday is May 30. Yamauchi is a young man of average height, standing at 168 centimeters, with short brown hair and red eyes.
Yamauchi's defining characteristic is his persistent dishonesty. An interviewer from his entrance examination noted his strong tendency to lie, which is considered the specific defect that placed him in Class D. He frequently exaggerates his past, for instance, falsely claiming to have been a national-level table tennis player and the ace of his middle school baseball team. He is also depicted as egotistical and self-serving, primarily concerned with his own benefit and seeking shortcuts to success rather than putting in genuine effort.
Yamauchi has a perverted and immature side, shared with his friends. He is attracted to several female classmates, including Kikyō Kushida, though he considers her out of his league. His interest in Airi Sakura is depicted as shallow; he admits to pursuing her because he believes her sweet and submissive nature makes her easy to win over, and he later confesses his feelings for her were not serious. Following a swift rejection from Sakura, he briefly gains a moment of self-awareness, noting the shallowness of his feelings.
Yamauchi’s selfishness and opportunistic behavior become more pronounced when he is easily manipulated by Arisu Sakayanagi, the leader of Class A. Deceived by her false promise of a relationship, he agrees to become her spy and betray his own class. During this period, his arrogance grows considerably; he condescendingly refers to himself as Class D's "lethal weapon" and takes pleasure in tormenting classmates affected by defamatory rumors.
His primary role in the story is as a minor antagonist. During the Class Poll special exam, Yamauchi rallies over half of Class D to vote for the expulsion of Kiyotaka Ayanokōji, following Sakayanagi's instructions in exchange for promised protection and praise votes from Class A. This plan backfires when Sakayanagi, seeking revenge for a previous incident where Yamauchi caused her to fall and made a crude remark, betrays him and directs her class's praise votes to Ayanokōji instead. His actions exposed, Yamauchi receives the highest number of criticism votes in his class and lacks the 20 million private points required to avoid expulsion, making him the first student from his class to be expelled. He reacts with furious denial and humiliation, lashing out verbally and physically at his classmates before being restrained.
Yamauchi has no notable academic or physical abilities. His student evaluation is below average, with poor scores in academic ability, intelligence, and decision-making. His only demonstrated “talent” is a self-serving inclination to lie. Throughout the story, he remains largely stagnant, failing to mature or reflect on his behavior in contrast to his friends, which ultimately leads to his isolation and expulsion. His key relationships are with his friends Sudō and Ike, his unrequited crushes on Sakura and Kushida, his manipulative partnership with Sakayanagi, and his antagonistic interactions with other classmates such as Suzune Horikita and Rokusuke Kōenji.
