Description
Eli Ayase is a third-year student at Otonokizaka High School who initially serves as the student council president before passing the role to Honoka Kosaka. She has one-quarter Russian heritage, which she inherits from her grandmother, a fact that contributes to her distinctive appearance of long blonde hair usually tied in a ponytail and light blue eyes. Standing 162 centimeters tall, she is often noted for her well-proportioned figure and sharp style. Eli has a younger sister named Alisa, and the two live together while maintaining a close relationship with their grandmother, whom Eli affectionately calls "Obaasama". Due to her father's work, Eli spent her kindergarten years in Russia before returning to Japan for elementary school.

As a student, Eli is known for being clear-headed, athletic, and capable of performing most tasks at an above-average level, which has made her highly popular among her peers. Her sense of responsibility and her reputation as a role model have earned her the respectful nickname "Eli-senpai" from underclassmen. Beneath her composed and sometimes stern exterior, however, Eli is a kind and caring person, particularly toward those she is close to, such as her sister and her friend Nozomi Tojo. She is also dependable and level-headed, often acting as a strategist for the group's promotions and public image. Despite her mature demeanor, she has some unexpected quirks: she is afraid of the dark and haunted houses, and she can be surprisingly gullible, having once almost eaten a piece of plastic chocolate believing it was real. A notable verbal tic is her frequent use of the Russian word "хорошо" (pronounced "Harasho"), which means "good" or "okay".

Eli's backstory is deeply tied to her past as a ballet dancer. Both her mother and grandmother practiced ballet, and Eli herself was a dedicated dancer who competed in her youth. However, she experienced repeated failures and often found herself at the bottom of the rankings, struggling to pass auditions. These setbacks led her to give up on her dream of becoming a ballet star and to close her heart to the idea of pursuing performance arts again. This history is the primary source of her initial opposition to school idols, as she saw them as amateurs whose efforts would not be sufficient to save Otonokizaka from closure. Her skepticism was so strong that she even dismissed top idol groups like A-RISE as "nothing more than amateurs" until she witnessed their live performance. Although she opposed Honoka and the others, she secretly filmed their early performance and uploaded it online, an act that revealed her hidden interest and her desire for the school to succeed, albeit on her own terms.

Eli's role within μ's is multifaceted. She eventually joins the group as the final member, encouraged by Nozomi, her sister Alisa, and Umi Sonoda, who sought her help as a dance coach. Her ballet training makes her an excellent dancer, and she becomes the group's de facto choreographer, responsible for creating and refining their routines. Alongside the similarly serious-minded Umi, Eli serves as a stabilizing force and a sub-leader, helping to organize the group and maintain focus. She proposed abolishing the group's strict senpai-kohai hierarchy to create a more comfortable and equal atmosphere, which helped strengthen their unity. Her mature image is also credited with boosting μ's popularity among female fans. Eli's strategic thinking is on display when she plans promotional activities, such as organizing street performances in Akihabara. Beyond dancing, her hobbies include quilting, making accessories like earrings and necklaces, and she is also skilled at costume making and speaking Russian.

Key relationships profoundly shape Eli's character. Her closest bond is with Nozomi Tojo, the student council vice president, who sees past Eli's guarded exterior and provides her with the emotional support needed to embrace her true desires. Honoka Kosaka serves as a foil to Eli; where Eli is cautious and hides her weaknesses, Honoka is direct and acts on her emotions, a trait Eli admits to envying and admiring. Her relationship with Honoka evolves from rivalry and opposition to mutual respect after Honoka becomes the new student council president and Eli joins μ's. Umi Sonoda also shares a strong working relationship with Eli, often collaborating with her on training and group management. As a mentor figure to the younger members, Eli encourages their growth, as seen when she pushes Kotori to write a song and later when she insists that Rin take on the role of center.

Throughout the story, Eli undergoes significant development. She transitions from an initially cold and rigid opponent of school idols to a passionate and integral member of μ's. Her character arc is defined by overcoming her past failures in ballet and learning to pursue her passion for performance without fear of inadequacy. By joining the group and helping to save Otonokizaka, she not only reignites her love for dance but also learns to balance her sense of responsibility with personal fulfillment, ultimately embracing her role in the group she once rejected.
