Description
Haruto Aoi serves as the tactical instructor at Mihama Academy, a special training school that has been repurposed to train elite agents for the anti-terrorist organization SORD. He is also a handler, managing and overseeing the students who live and train at the facility. Formerly an officer of CIRS, a central intelligence and research division, Haruto has extensive field combat experience from his time in active service and still maintains a network of connections with current operatives. Despite his young appearance, which is noted as being almost androgynous or feminine, his experience on the battlefield is considerable.

In terms of personality, Haruto generally radiates a sense of warmth and gentility. He has a calm and unwavering nature that seems inherent to him rather than stemming from confidence in his own strength, and he is said to maintain this composure whether he wins or loses. However, he also has a mischievous, teasing streak, particularly when it comes to one of his students, Tohka Shishigaya. This playful side often leads the girls under his charge to treat him less like a strict instructor and more like an immature peer, making him a frequent target of their teasing. This gentle facade contrasts sharply with his demeanor on the battlefield, where he becomes a different person. In combat, he is described as cruel and efficient, using his skill and bloodlust to eliminate enemies without hesitation, believing his actions to be justified to the point where he is not against homicide.

Haruto is intensely private and reluctant to discuss his past. Significant portions of his personal history and memories are vague or blank, and even his work history contains many gaps. Some information indicates that he was artificially created from the DNA of other individuals as a genetically modified clone, recruited into a secret program as a child, though this is a closely guarded aspect of his background. A central figure in his past and a primary driving force in his life is his master, also named Aoi. This master, a young woman who trained and raised him, had a death wish and wanted to be killed by someone stronger than herself. Haruto's primary motivation becomes wanting to be the one to grant her wish, to become strong enough to kill her himself out of a sense of compassion and charity rather than malice. Her death humanizes him, as he is shown grieving for her while eating ramen at a stall they used to visit together, revealing that he is not simply an unfeeling machine for killing.

Within the story of Phantom Trigger, Haruto's role is that of the undisputed main character and protagonist. He acts as a mentor and protective figure to the students of Class A, including Rena Fukami, to whom he is assigned as a handler for firearms, and Murasaki Ikoma, whom he shares a brotherly dynamic with from their childhood. In real combat scenarios, he typically takes on the role of a strategic commander, issuing orders from a command position rather than fighting on the front lines. This is partly due to his noted weakness with firearms. Haruto is notoriously bad with guns, his aim is so poor that some people suspect his ineptitude is actually a deliberate deception on his part. When he does personally engage in combat, his weapon of choice is a sword, though its construction is non-traditional and it would be a stretch to call it a traditional Japanese katana.

Haruto possesses exceptional and seemingly invincible combat skills when wielding his sword. He is capable of parrying bullets with his blade and dodging gunfire, and he leaves an impression of being nearly undefeatable in battle, never losing to any opponent in his own story. His abilities are such that he grows into a man capable of battling an enemy who even defeated his own master. During intense confrontations, his demeanor shifts noticeably. He may tie his long, waist-length blue hair back, and his aura becomes intimidating and deadly efficient, switching into a mode where he can become ruthless. Despite his battle prowess, he has little interest in food, often making do with just a salad if left to his own devices. His development throughout the narrative involves confronting his past, dealing with the loss of his master, and fulfilling his role as a protector and instructor for the next generation of agents at Mihama Academy.
