Description
Kiyotaka Ayanokouji is the main protagonist of the story, a first-year student at the prestigious Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School. He is assigned to Class D, which is known as the gathering place for the school's so-called problem children. On the surface, Ayanokouji presents himself as an average, unassuming, and socially awkward young man with little motivation or ambition. He achieves a uniform score of 50 points on every subject of the entrance examination, a deliberate act designed to make him appear perfectly mediocre and avoid drawing any attention to himself.

This facade of ordinariness hides an extraordinary and complex individual. Ayanokouji is a product of the White Room, a secret, government-funded facility where children were raised and subjected to an incredibly rigorous curriculum intended to create geniuses. He is a survivor of the 4th Generation of this program, widely considered to be its most demanding and severe iteration. His upbringing in this emotionless, high-pressure environment has had a profound and lasting impact on his personality. He views human relationships not as connections of trust and affection, but as strategic tools to be used for the sake of victory. In a defining moment, he clearly states that he has never considered anyone an ally and that people are nothing but tools to him.

Despite this cold and calculating worldview, Ayanokouji’s primary motivation for enrolling in the school is to escape his past and live a quiet, ordinary high school life free from the control of the White Room. He desires freedom and wishes to experience the normalcy he was denied. However, his exceptional abilities and the circumstances he finds himself in continually force him to act from the shadows. He secretly manipulates events to protect his own position and, reluctantly, to guide his class toward success, often without his classmates even realizing his involvement.

In the story of the second season, Ayanokouji continues to operate as the hidden mastermind of Class D. He publicly supports Suzune Horikita, a highly capable but socially isolated classmate who is determined to lead their class to the top A ranking. While Horikita believes they are partners working towards a common goal, Ayanokouji sees her as a convenient pawn. He values her determination and uses her as a front to obscure his own machinations. His other key relationships are equally complicated. He befriends the popular and seemingly kind Kikyou Kushida, but only after discovering her secret, malicious side, which he uses as leverage to control her. His association with the shy and insecure Airi Sakura is also strategic, as he finds her to be a useful person to manipulate. Ayanokouji's most significant relationship is arguably with Kei Karuizawa, a girl in his class who is a victim of bullying. He chooses to protect her, not out of compassion, but to bind her to him as a devoted pawn who will follow his every command, a decision that ironically begins to introduce cracks in his emotionless exterior.

Throughout the series, Ayanokouji demonstrates a subtle but significant development. While he begins as someone almost completely detached from his emotions and unable to understand interpersonal feelings, his interactions with his classmates slowly force him to confront his own humanity. The more he experiences the normal school life he claims to want, the more his rigid, tool-based worldview is challenged, even if he does not fully understand or accept this change.

Ayanokouji possesses abilities that are far beyond those of a typical high school student, a direct result of his White Room training. He has exceptional intelligence and strategic thinking, allowing him to analyze complex situations almost instantly and plan dozens of moves ahead of his opponents. He has demonstrated the ability to outmaneuver a government-level chess computer. Physically, he is incredibly formidable, possessing superhuman stamina, strength, and speed. He has easily defeated multiple professional fighters and skilled martial artists without any visible effort or change in his heart rate. His analytical skills extend to combat, where he can assess an opponent's fighting style in a single glance and adapt his own techniques, which include karate, boxing, and jeet kune do, to counter them perfectly. Despite his desire for anonymity, Ayanokouji Kiyotaka is, in reality, an unparalleled genius whose true capabilities are only glimpsed by those who force him to reveal them.
