Description
Kikyou Kushida is a first-year student in Class D at the Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School, later advancing to the second year in the same class. Born on January 23, she is a girl of average height with short, beige-colored hair and distinctive crimson gradient eyes. On the surface, she is known as the idol of Class D, projecting an image of being cheerful, energetic, and universally kind. Her public goal is to befriend every student in the school, and she works tirelessly to maintain a charming and approachable demeanor with everyone, from her own classmates to upperclassmen and students in rival classes.

Beneath this flawless facade, however, Kikyou possesses a deeply resentful, calculating, and manipulative true nature. This hidden personality is driven by an intense craving for validation and a desperate need to protect her perfect reputation at all costs. The origin of this duality traces back to her middle school years. During that time, she publicly presented a friendly image to everyone but privately vented her frustrations by posting criticisms of her classmates' flaws and secrets on an anonymous online account. When that account was discovered, her two-faced nature was exposed. In retaliation, she revealed every secret her classmates had confided in her, causing widespread mutual hatred and a class-wide boycott of school. This traumatic event cemented her fear of being exposed and her ruthless determination to maintain her facade in high school.

Kikyou’s primary motivation is to preserve her idealized school life where she is universally liked and admired. She views anyone who knows her true past or poses a threat to her image as an obstacle to be eliminated. This is most evident in her relationship with her classmate, Suzune Horikita, who attended the same middle school. Kikyou initially tried to befriend Suzune not out of genuine affection, but to assess whether Suzune knew about her past. When Suzune consistently rejected her advances and remained aloof, Kikyou developed a deep and obsessive hatred for her, partly because Suzune has no hidden agenda and is straightforward about who she is. Kikyou confesses that she despises this quality, as it stands in stark contrast to her own duplicitous existence.

Kikyou’s role in the story is that of a complex antagonist and a constant source of internal conflict for Class D. She is willing to betray her own class to achieve her personal goals. She secretly leaks information to and cooperates with Kakeru Ryuuen, the aggressive leader of Class C, in multiple schemes designed to humiliate and expel Suzune. Her tactics are often cruel and underhanded. When Kiyotaka Ayanokouji accidentally witnesses her true personality during a private tantrum, she immediately threatens to falsely accuse him of sexual assault, even going so far as to press his hand against her chest to fabricate evidence. She shows no hesitation or remorse in such actions, displaying a chilling nonchalance as she manipulates situations to her advantage. Her key relationships are defined by this duality. With Yousuke Hirata and most other classmates, she maintains a friendly, supportive persona. However, her interactions with Kiyotaka are layered with mutual suspicion; she knows he has seen her real self, and he remains perpetually wary of her. Her relationship with Suzune is one of open antagonism, though Suzune, aware of Kikyou's hostility, still tries to reach her.

Throughout the first year, Kikyou remains a formidable schemer, but her plans are consistently thwarted, often by the hidden interventions of Kiyotaka. A significant turning point in her development occurs during the second-year Unanimous Exam, where Kiyotaka deliberately exposes her dual personality and her true intentions to the entire class. Facing almost certain expulsion, she is stunned when Suzune Horikita strongly advocates for her to stay. After being saved, Kikyou's behavior shifts. While she continues to contribute to the class, she does so with a newfound complexity, maintaining a tense and often combative relationship with Suzune, who has now become the class leader. She remains wary and frightened of Kiyotaka, having realized the true extent of his capabilities, but also shows hints of gratitude towards him for saving her from another student later on. Her development moves from being a pure antagonist to a more unpredictable and reluctantly cooperative classmate, whose obsession with her image has been shattered but who must now navigate a new reality.

Kikyou possesses notable abilities that make her dangerous. Her greatest strength is her exceptional social intelligence and charisma, which allows her to build a vast network of connections and gather sensitive information on nearly everyone she meets. She is also skilled in academics and sports. However, her defining ability is her masterful skill in deception, allowing her to seamlessly switch between her public and private personas to manipulate the emotions and actions of those around her.
