Description
Mai Zenin is a second-year student at Kyoto Jujutsu High and the younger twin sister of Maki Zenin. As a member of the Zenin family, one of the three great sorcerer clans, her life has been heavily defined by its oppressive traditions and values. Standing at 170 centimeters tall, she has short black hair and dark eyes, matching her sister in height but otherwise maintaining a distinct appearance.

Mai possesses a personality that is outwardly crude, sarcastic, and confrontational. She often greets others with insults and a condescending attitude, exemplified when she first mocks Nobara Kugisaki and Megumi Fushiguro over the presumed death of a friend. This harsh exterior is a direct result of her deep-seated trauma and resentment. Unlike her sister, Mai never wanted to be a sorcerer and would have preferred a normal, quiet life. Her primary motivation stems from a childhood promise with Maki that they would always stay together. When Maki broke that promise to leave the Zenin clan and pursue her own path as a sorcerer, Mai felt profoundly abandoned. To avoid further backlash from the clan and to remain close to her sister in some way, Mai forced herself down the path of a sorcerer, a life she deeply resents. Her animosity toward Maki is thus a complex mixture of anger, a plea for attention, and a lingering, unspoken affection.

Within the story, Mai serves as a foil to her sister and a representation of the internal decay of the Zenin clan. Her most significant role comes during the Kyoto Goodwill Event arc, where she is part of a plan to kill Yuji Itadori. In this event, she confronts Maki in a one-on-one fight, refusing to call for reinforcements despite knowing she is outmatched. This decision highlights her personal stakes in the conflict. After firing all six shots from her revolver, she uses her innate technique to create a seventh bullet, a trick meant to catch Maki off guard. Maki ultimately catches the bullet and defeats her, leading to an emotional confrontation where Mai reveals her resentment about being left behind. She confesses she would have been content to serve the Zenin clan as a servant if it meant Maki had stayed with her.

Mai's most significant development occurs after the Shibuya Incident. Following the death of the clan head, Naobito Zenin, a power struggle ensues. Her father, Ogi Zenin, severely wounds both Mai and Maki, throwing them into a pit of cursed spirits. With her own injuries being fatal, Mai makes a final, selfless decision. She uses her Creation technique one last time, not to create a single bullet, but to forge a powerful cursed tool: a replica of the Split Soul Katana. In doing so, she also willingly takes all the cursed energy that was shared between the twins, removing the final restriction on Maki's Heavenly Restriction. This sacrifice allows Maki to achieve a body of steel, completely free of cursed energy, and grants her the weapon needed to destroy the Zenin clan. Mai's death is the catalyst for Maki's brutal and complete severance from their family.

Regarding her abilities, Mai is classified as a Grade 3 sorcerer. Her physical capabilities are not particularly remarkable, making her weak in close-quarters combat. To compensate, she is an exceptionally skilled marksman. Her accuracy with a firearm is not derived from cursed energy but is a testament to her own hard work and training. She fights primarily from a distance, using a revolver to fire bullets imbued with cursed energy. Her innate technique is called Creation, which allows her to manifest physical objects from nothing. This technique is highly inefficient and consumes a massive amount of cursed energy. Given her low reserves, Mai can typically only use it to create a single bullet per day, a limitation she exploits as a bluff in combat. This seventh bullet, created after her cylinder is empty, is her last resort. Her hobby is caring for cacti.
