Description
Captain Connor, originally from the Aoi Cosmos, is introduced as the helmsman of a mysterious ship called the Edens One. He first appears adrift in space, clutching a ship's wheel amidst a school of space fish, after his vessel was destroyed in a catastrophic accident. Physically, he is a portly, elderly man with short gray hair, thick eyebrows, and a mustache, later adopting a captain's uniform complete with a peaked cap and a draped overcoat.
In terms of personality, Connor is a highly eccentric individual who maintains a calm and serious composure that often contrasts with his easygoing, friendly, and sometimes perverted nature. He has a habit of overstepping his bounds as a guest, such as using the ship's Dress Factory without permission, teaching inappropriate language to the android Pino, and wandering into the bath while the female crew members are using it under the mistaken assumption it was a mixed bath. Despite these annoying quirks, he is not malicious and forms a genuine bond with the crew, particularly with Shiki Granbell, whose personal struggles he seems to understand. A constant and defining trait is his insistence on being addressed as Captain, regardless of the situation or which universe he inhabits.
His primary motivation appears to be a deep-seated pride and passion for piloting, always seeking to demonstrate his exceptional skills. When he first joins the Edens Zero crew, he immediately offers to become their new captain, a proposal they swiftly reject. However, his actions reveal a desire to be useful and to connect with a new found family, as he grows close to the members of the Edens Zero in a short amount of time. In alternate timelines, his motivations shift based on his circumstances, either serving the Demon King Ziggy faithfully or seeking to escape from him.
Connor's role in the story begins as a mysterious castaway rescued by the Edens Zero crew. He quickly proves his worth by piloting the ship to their destination, Sun Jewel, in one day instead of three by taking a dangerous shortcut through a debris field, shocking the crew with his expertise. This act reveals his true identity as the captain of the Edens One, a ship connected to the series' overarching mysteries. He serves as the Edens Zero's helmsman, but his role becomes more complex with the introduction of the multiverse. After Rebecca uses her Cat Leaper power to create World No. 30, Connor's history is rewritten. In this new universe, he is the cold, faithful helmsman of the Edens One under Ziggy's command, though he retains faint, dreamlike memories of his time with the Edens Zero crew from the previous timeline, which he recalls fondly as feeling like being embraced by a family. In a subsequent universe, Universe 3, he is instead a former member of the Freedom Force who fled from Ziggy.
Key relationships define his character arc. He forms a strong, inexplicable friendship with Shiki, who accepts him despite his oddities and agrees to call him Captain. He also has a notable dynamic with the android Pino, whom he attempts to corrupt with swear words, much to the annoyance of the other crew members like Hermit. His most significant relationship is with Rebecca, as it is eventually revealed during the Kaede War that he is her father. This familial connection adds a profound layer to his presence in the story.
Connor undergoes significant development across different universal timelines. In the original timeline, he transitions from a strange, unwanted guest to a valued, if eccentric, member of the Edens Zero family. His character takes a darker turn in World No. 30, where he obediently serves Ziggy, even firing upon the Edens Zero and pursuing them aggressively, though he briefly hesitates when ordered to destroy them, showing a lingering trace of his former self. His development is intrinsically tied to the shifting realities of the series, with his allegiance and past changing each time the universe is altered.
Connor's most notable ability is his expert-level piloting. He boasts that no ship in the cosmos can outrun him and demonstrates this by navigating treacherous space debris fields with ease and handling the Edens One's advanced weapon systems in combat. He is capable of bringing a ship to its maximum performance and has a deep understanding of ship systems, including their Ether Gear capabilities. He is proficient in operating both the Edens Zero and its counterpart, the Edens One, and has access to their respective ship functions from the bridge.
