Description
Poseidon Shura is a character from the anime and manga Edens Zero, where he serves as a significant antagonist. He is the adopted son of Poseidon Nero, the emperor who rules the Nero Empire, and he carries the title of prince of that empire. He is also known by the epithet King of Gravity, a name that reflects the source of his combat power.
Roughly fifteen years before the events of the main story, Shura was adopted by Nero, who selected him by means of a guiding dice and intended to pass his own power on to the boy. Shura, however, proved incompatible with the emperor's power. Instead of inheriting Nero's abilities, he was taught the Ether Gear known as Satan Gravity by Ziggy, a friend of Nero and a major figure in the wider story. This training shaped Shura into a highly capable fighter and set the foundation for his later role as a rival to the protagonist Shiki Granbell, who wields the same power.
In appearance, Shura is a slim yet well-toned young man with amber eyes, dark eyeliner, studded ears, and spiky green hair styled as a crew cut. His most distinctive feature is a set of dark tattoos that cover half of his upper body, giving him an intimidating look that matches his behavior.
Shura's personality is defined by cruelty and sadism. He is a young man who feels entitled to everything in the Aoi Cosmos, including the people within it, simply because he is the son of the emperor. He has little patience for disobedience and is willing to kill anyone who displeases him. His motivations are driven by this sense of entitlement and a hunger for power, and he tends to view others as tools or obstacles rather than equals. Despite this, the story also shows that he is capable of honor. In certain circumstances, he recognizes the help given by the crew of the Edens Zero and accepts Shiki's friendship, which suggests that his cruelty is not entirely without limits.
In the story, Shura serves as the secondary antagonist of the Nero 66 Arc, where he becomes a major adversary for Shiki and his companions. He stands out among the series' villains because he is one of the few opponents who challenges Shiki on multiple levels at once, pushing him mentally, emotionally, ideologically, and physically. This makes Shura a defining obstacle in Shiki's development rather than a simple brute-force enemy. In the later Universe Zero saga, a different version of Shura appears as a supporting character. Laguna remarks that this Shura is a more behaved person compared to his counterparts from previous universes, and shortly afterward Shura arrives on the planet Sandra to confront Laguna. In this timeline, he displays a more honorable side, acknowledging the Edens Zero crew's assistance and accepting Shiki's friendship.
Shura's key relationships grow out of his position within the Nero Empire. Poseidon Nero is his adoptive father and the emperor whose power he was originally meant to inherit, and their connection shapes much of Shura's identity and ambitions. Ziggy serves as his teacher, having passed on the Satan Gravity technique after Nero's own power proved incompatible with the boy. Shiki Granbell is his most important counterpart: the two share the same Ether Gear and clash over their opposing views of how strength should be used, with Shiki representing compassion and Shura representing domination. His encounter with Laguna in the Universe Zero saga further shows how his character differs depending on the circumstances of the timeline.
In terms of development, Shura's arc is defined by the contrast between his earlier self and his Universe Zero counterpart. His original incarnation is ruthless and power-hungry, while his later version is notably more restrained and honorable. This shift illustrates how the same person can change when placed in different circumstances, and it allows the series to explore themes of redemption and second chances.
Shura's most notable abilities come from Satan Gravity, an Ether Gear that manipulates gravity. While Shiki, who uses the same power, focuses on altering his own gravity, Shura specializes in altering the gravity of objects in his surroundings. He uses this strength to devastating effect in combat. His named techniques include Heavy Rain, which lets him fire debris at a target, and Heavy Lance, which allows him to shape stone into a massive lance and pierce his opponent with it. He is also able to enter Overdrive, an advanced state that pushes an Ether Gear user's power to its limits and reveals its full potential. Combined with his aggressive personality and combat experience, these abilities make Poseidon Shura one of the most dangerous fighters in his part of the story.
