Description
Jinn, whose real name is Kris Rutherford, is a cyborg, referred to as an O-Tech, with approximately sixty percent of his body being mechanical. He is introduced as a former antagonist and mercenary, later becoming a supporting member of the Edens Zero crew. His history is marked by tragedy; as a child, his family was patrons of the Müller Royal Laboratories. After they withdrew their support following the scientist's arrest, the vengeful Müller murdered his parents and abducted both Jinn and his younger sister, Kleene, to be used as subjects in cruel experiments. These experiments resulted in his extensive cybernetic modifications and were a source of deep trauma for both siblings.
In his professional life, Jinn began working as a mercenary for a criminal organization called Rogue Out, operating under the command of an imposter using the name Sister. His primary motivation for taking on any mission, including the abduction of B-Cubers on the planet Blue Garden, was the promise that this fake Sister would heal his sister's damaged emotional state. After Rogue Out was disbanded, he and Kleene came to work under the crime lord Drakken Joe, where Jinn served as an assistant to his sister, who was a member of the Element 4.
Personality-wise, Jinn is typically serious and dedicated, approaching his assignments with a no-nonsense attitude. Despite his career as a mercenary, he is not portrayed as sadistic or cruel, and he refrains from torturing those he is hired to capture. He possesses a strong moral awareness, acknowledging the terrible things he has done while working under the false Sister and later for Drakken Joe. Jinn initially describes himself as a loner who claims to have no friends, with his sister Kleene being the sole person to whom he feels a genuine connection. His most defining trait is his unwavering loyalty and fierce protectiveness over Kleene. He made a solemn promise to protect her no matter the cost, a vow that ultimately leads him to betray Drakken Joe upon discovering that the crime lord was siphoning away his sister's life force.
Jinn's role in the story evolves significantly. He starts as an antagonist during the Guilst arc, sent to abduct B-Cubers, and engages in combat with the protagonist, Shiki Granbell. He later serves as a subordinate to Drakken Joe on the Belial Gore. However, when the truth about Drakken's life-draining operations is revealed, Jinn defects and allies himself with the crew of the Edens Zero to save his sister. Initially, he and Kleene stay on the Edens Zero only temporarily, with the goal of having the real Sister Ivry heal Kleene. After Sister Ivry successfully restores Kleene's emotions and the crew defeats the scientist Müller, who was the source of their past suffering, both siblings officially join the starship's crew, taking on the title Winds of Edens. His key relationships are centered on his sister, Kleene, whose well-being dictates his every action. He also forms a significant, if initially antagonistic, relationship with Shiki, which later grows into mutual respect and friendship. He interacts frequently with Sister Ivry, whose healing powers are crucial to his goals, and with other crew members like Weisz Steiner.
Throughout the narrative, Jinn shows significant character development. While he remains largely serious, his personality softens after his sister is successfully healed. He becomes more open and is even seen smiling, a stark contrast to his earlier demeanor. He eventually acknowledges Shiki and the others as friends, moving past his self-imposed isolation. In combat, Jinn is a formidable fighter. He possesses a Wind Ether Gear known as Wind Rage, which grants him the ability to manipulate wind for swift movement, incapacitating enemies, and launching powerful attacks. Notable techniques include the Skymech Ninjutsu Attack: Windstorm Slash, which fires a powerful blast of wind. His cybernetic body also provides enhancements, such as Rocket Arms that can be detached and fired at opponents. He can access a powerful transformation called Overdrive, which significantly amplifies his wind abilities, changes his appearance, and grants him the power of flight with large feathered wings.
