Description
Daisuke Jigen is a core character from a long-running Japanese anime and manga series, known for his role as a professional gunman and the closest partner to the series' main character. Jigen stands at 178 centimeters tall and maintains a wiry, athletic build. His signature appearance is remarkably consistent: he almost always wears a dark suit with a tie, a light-colored dress shirt, and a black or grey fedora with a wide brim that typically shadows his eyes. Beneath the hat, he has long, messy black hair and an unkempt chin curtain beard. His clothing has ranged from brands like Givenchy to Fendi, though his look remains one of understated, classic basics.

The character was created by Monkey Punch, with his appearance and temperament inspired by the American actor James Coburn, particularly his role in the film The Magnificent Seven. The name Daisuke Jigen itself originates from the creator's fondness for the word dimension, which is jigen in Japanese. Jigen's background has been portrayed differently across various adaptations, which often present conflicting accounts. One of the more common origins, depicted in some anime series, states that he was born in the Bronx, New York, and became involved with organized crime at a young age, working as a mobster and a hitman. In this version, he later relocated to Europe and eventually Japan. Other adaptations, however, suggest a Japanese nationality. His original appearance in the manga was as a hitman hired to kill the protagonist, but after failing, he became a partner and close friend.

Jigen's personality is defined by a compelling set of contradictions. He is a man of few words and generally presents a cynical, pragmatic, and gruff exterior. This facade often makes him the voice of reason, serving as a steadying influence on his more impulsive and flamboyant partner. He has a cynical streak, particularly when it comes to the untrustworthy femme fatale, Fujiko Mine, and often becomes irritated when his partner agrees to her schemes. His distrust of women is deep-seated, a trait born from a long history of failed romances where his love interests either betrayed him or met untimely ends. Despite this tough and cynical exterior, Jigen has a dry, ironic sense of humor and is fiercely loyal. He operates by a personal moral code; while he is the member of his group least apprehensive about taking a life, he considers killing women and children a strict taboo. He also has a few notable and humorous fears, including an intense phobia of dentists and a general fear of sharp objects. Despite his rough demeanor, he is shown to be awkward and somewhat soft when dealing with children.

His primary motivation is a unique blend of professional pride and personal loyalty. While he is a master thief driven by the prospect of treasure, his deep and abiding friendship with his partner is his central driving force. Theirs is the strongest and most defining relationship in Jigen's life. The two share a 50/50 partnership, with Jigen acting as the dependable right-hand man and a surrogate big brother who often has to restrain his companion's reckless plans. This partnership, forged from an initial rivalry, is built on absolute trust despite occasional bickering. In contrast, he perpetually distrusts the femme fatale Fujiko Mine and does not hesitate to voice his displeasure when she becomes involved in their plans. He shares a more formal but respectful partnership with the samurai Goemon Ishikawa XIII, and the two have a deep professional respect for each other's skills.

Jigen is defined by his unmatched marksmanship. His signature weapon is a Smith & Wesson Model 19.357 Magnum revolver, which he carries in a holster at the small of his back. He is renowned for his superhuman quick-draw speed, able to draw and fire his pistol in 0.3 seconds. His accuracy is depicted as being almost supernatural, capable of feats such as shooting down clay pigeons with a handgun, hitting a small coin from over a hundred meters away, or even hitting a bullet in mid-flight to deflect it. The brim of his fedora serves as a tool for aiming, contributing to his mystique as his eyes are rarely seen. Beyond his handgun, he is proficient with all kinds of weaponry, including machine guns, sniper rifles, and anti-tank rifles. He is also a capable hand-to-hand combatant and can pilot nearly any vehicle, including airplanes and tanks.

Over the course of the many manga and anime installments, his character has shown a clear trajectory from a potential antagonist to an unwaveringly loyal partner. While the various versions of his backstory differ, they converge on a common theme of a violent past from which he eventually turns towards a life of thievery. Through all his adventures, he has evolved into a more relaxed, if perpetually grumpy, partner who genuinely enjoys the thrill of the caper despite his complaints. He remains, above all else, a consummate professional whose loyalty to his friends is the most consistent and enduring aspect of his character.
