Description
The character designated AU-09 Analyzer is a central robotic crew member aboard the space battleship Yamato. Officially known as the R-9 Autonomous Type Shipborne Analysis Unit, this robot is a uniquely modified and greatly enhanced version of the standard AU-08 robot type. Its design is compact and distinctly non-humanoid, featuring a hemispherical head, two arms, and short legs that end in wide, multi-wheeled feet. Small thrusters are placed around its body for maneuverability in zero-gravity conditions. The unit is often described with male pronouns by the crew.

The personality of AU-09 is marked by an eagerness to be of service and a visible pride in its own robotic abilities, which it considers superior to biological lifeforms. Despite speaking with a robotic monotone, it is capable of expressing a range of human-like emotions through its words and body language. The robot demonstrates a genuine curiosity about human affairs and the nature of existence. Its motivations are rooted in fulfilling its duties as a member of the Yamato crew, protecting the ship and its companions, and exploring its own developing sense of self.

Within the story, Analyzer serves as a crew member in charge of analysis. Its regular station is a specially designed cradle on the Yamato's main bridge, where it provides support as a sub-frame of the ship's mainframe computer, monitoring sensors and computer operations. It is routinely assigned to external excursions, performing environmental analyses and heavy labor, and can operate inside a large exoskeleton to augment its strength and agility. Its expertise with computer systems proves vital on multiple occasions. After partnering with Chief Science Officer Shiro Sanada to study a captured enemy robot nicknamed Alter, Analyzer builds a bond with the mechanical being. This experience motivates it to contemplate its own place in the universe. The knowledge gained from Alter later allows Analyzer to understand enemy software. With Lieutenant Kaoru Niimi, it accesses the control system of a drill missile lodged in the Yamato to deactivate its explosives, and the pair develop a computer virus to shut down an invading battalion of enemy robots.

Key relationships define its journey. Analyzer shares an easy rapport and frequently collaborates with Lieutenant Niimi. It gradually forms a friendship with Dr. Sakezo Sado, who is sometimes flustered by the robot's literal worldview but nonetheless accepts its company. The destruction of Alter, a fellow robot, is a significant event that pushes Analyzer toward deeper existential thought. During a major battle, Yamato takes heavy fire, and Analyzer sustains critical damage. As its body and software fail, it manages to thank the sobbing Dr. Sado before shutting down permanently.

Notable abilities are integrated into its compact frame. A high-powered laser is built into its left index finger. Other fingertips can extend on cables for grasping and manipulating objects or for direct computer access. Its built-in sensors can read chemical composition, temperature, life signs, and decay rates in non-biological materials. The robot's artificial intelligence operates on an advanced quantum computer cluster system, allowing its independent personality to emerge naturally without artificial programming. The design and technical capabilities of this unit directly influence the creation of later command AIs in the early twenty-third century.
