Description
Nekome Kozō is the unnamed titular protagonist of the anime Youkaiden Nekome Kozō, adapted from the manga by Kazuo Umezu. He is a half-human, half-monster child born to a nekomata, a cat-like yokai, in the mountains. Because his appearance was too close to that of a human, his own kind abandoned him shortly after birth. He was later found and raised by a kind human, but after a disaster struck his childhood village which he could not prevent, he set out on an endless journey across Japan. In the anime, his wanderings are driven by a search for his missing mother, whom he believes is still alive.
His personality differs notably between the original manga and the anime adaptation. In the manga, Nekome Kozō is a morally gray figure. He takes pride in his monster heritage, even though other yokai despise him, and he has no qualms about allowing unpleasant or evil humans to suffer punishment, sometimes even siding with supernatural beings when they target someone he dislikes. He is less a conventional hero and more a liminal observer, a discoverer of horror who witnesses darkly human tragedies and intervenes only when compelled by circumstance or a sense of obligation. The anime version, however, portrays him as significantly gentler, more kind-hearted, and more openly sympathetic toward the humans he encounters. He retains a sense of loneliness and isolation but acts out of genuine compassion, helping the families who offer him shelter and fighting to protect them from monstrous threats.
Motivation in the anime is closely tied to his quest to reunite with his mother. This personal goal gives his wandering a clearer direction than in the source material. In both versions, he is also motivated by a desire to survive and find a place where he belongs, though he never fully achieves that acceptance from either world.
His role in the story is that of an episodic protagonist who drifts into new towns and takes up uninvited residence in the attics of human homes. From this hidden vantage point, he observes the events unfolding below and becomes entangled in supernatural crises affecting the families. He often acts as a catalyst for resolution, using his abilities to confront monsters and evil spirits. Despite his best efforts, he is invariably blamed by humans for the strange occurrences around him.
His key relationships are defined by rejection. He is spurned by both the human and yokai worlds, leaving him in a state of permanent isolation. His only reliable companions are cats, whose language he understands and whom he can summon and command. In the anime, his bond with the brief families he stays with is more emotionally warm, and the presence of his mother as a distant goal shapes his interactions. Among the yokai, the three-eyed dwarf Kodomo serves as a recurring antagonist.
Development is subtle in the manga, where he remains largely a consistent, unchanging wanderer. The anime gives him a narrative arc: his search for his mother leads him through many trials, and the final episode brings a reunion with her, providing a sense of closure and resolution to his journey.
Nekome Kozō possesses a range of notable abilities derived from his feline heritage. He has enhanced physical capabilities including exceptional reflexes, jumping power, balance, sharp eyesight, and a keen sense of smell. He has sharp claws on his fingers and toes capable of tearing through human and yokai flesh. His eyes possess a hypnotic or illusionary power that allows him to create doppelgangers or project visions, though this can be countered by other yokai with similar abilities. He can transform his bodily fluids, including sweat, saliva, tears, blood, and urine, into a poisonous substance that is lethal to humans and harmful to yokai. He can heal injuries, both his own and those of others, by licking the wound, though this is less effective against wounds caused by blades or firearms. He also has regenerative abilities and can recover from significant damage. Additionally, he can understand the speech of cats and call upon them for aid, though he cannot fully control them against powerful opponents. In the anime, he is often outmatched by stronger yokai and must rely on trickery and cleverness to escape or defeat them.
