Description
Kurojo, often called Kuro, is a member of the Oniwabanshu, a covert ninja group that once served the Tokugawa shogunate and now operates the Aoi-Ya inn in Kyoto. In everyday life, he serves the inn as a professional chef of Japanese cuisine, a repairman, and an assistant to the elder Okina. He also acts as a caretaker and protector for Misao Makimachi, the spirited granddaughter of the former Oniwabanshu leader. Physically, Kurojo is a very large, muscular man with a shaved head, thin arched eyebrows, and eyes that are usually closed in a calm expression. He wears a white hachimaki headband, a blue shirt, a white apron, dark pants, and sandals, an appearance that combines the practicality of his inn work with his readiness for combat.

As a fighter, Kurojo employs Oniwabanshu-style martial arts, specializing in the use of a massive bo staff and thick bracer-like gauntlets that can be thrown like shuriken. He is proficient with tekko ring shuriken as well, and his strength and skill allow him to easily overpower elite soldiers among the forces of Shishio Makoto. His combat role comes to the forefront when the Aoi-Ya is threatened. During the attack by Shishio’s giant warrior Fuji, Kurojo witnesses the arrival of Kenshin’s master, Hiko Seijuro, and watches in astonishment as Hiko defeats Fuji. After the battle, he helps clean up the area alongside his comrades and later joins a celebratory gathering following Shishio’s downfall.

Kurojo’s personality is defined by a quiet dependability and unwavering loyalty to the Oniwabanshu. He is not verbose, but his actions reveal a deep sense of duty toward protecting his home and the people he cares about, especially Misao and Okina. He has no grand personal motivations beyond serving the Aoi-Ya and supporting his fellow former ninja. His relationships are anchored in the collective bond of the Oniwabanshu: he works closely with other inn employees like Shirojo, Masukami, and Omine, and he shares a deep respect for Okina’s leadership. His connection with Misao is both protective and nurturing, as he helps guide her in the absence of her grandfather. Throughout the conflict, Kurojo remains a steadfast supporting presence, demonstrating that even without a complex character arc, his reliability and martial competence form a vital part of the group’s resistance against Shishio’s uprising.
