Description
Komagata Yumi was originally an oiran, the highest rank of courtesan, in the Yoshiwara district. She was well‑cultured, intelligent, and had grown up in a comfortable environment. Her resentment toward the Meiji government’s treatment of prostitutes, whom it regarded as little better than livestock, led her to despise the regime. She fell deeply in love with Makoto Shishio, who returned her feelings, and she became one of his most loyal followers, joining his conspiracy to overthrow the Meiji government. Her devotion to Shishio was absolute, and she was constantly concerned about his failing health. In the story of Rurouni Kenshin Part III: The Legend Ends, Yumi remains at Shishio’s side throughout the final battle aboard his ironclad ship. She participates in holding Kaoru hostage alongside Hoji and is present during the climactic confrontation. When Kenshin gains the upper hand, Yumi rushes to shield Shishio’s body. In a tragic act, Shishio runs her through with his own sword in a desperate attempt to wound Kenshin as well, and she dies from the blow. Her death highlights the depth of her unwavering loyalty. Yumi is not a combatant; her strengths lie in her intelligence, social poise, and the cultural refinement she gained as a courtesan. Her role in the narrative is defined by her relationship with Shishio, and her character arc remains focused on her devotion to him until her sacrificial end.
