Description
Houji Sadojima serves as the chief strategist and a key member of the Juppongatana, the elite ten-sword fighting force led by the archenemy Makoto Shishio. In the film Rurouni Kenshin Part III: The Legend Ends, he appears as a primary lieutenant and the organizational mastermind behind Shishio's plot to overthrow the Meiji government.

Houji Sadojima was originally a diplomat or official within the Meiji government, but he became deeply disillusioned with its leadership and overall direction. Believing that the government lacked the strength and will to control the country, he abandoned his post and eventually aligned himself with Shishio. This decision stemmed from his conversion to Shishio’s brutal philosophy of "survival of the fittest," the idea that only the strong should rule over the weak.

Personality-wise, Houji is defined by a cold, pragmatic intelligence and an almost fanatical devotion to his master. While he is not a frontline swordsman, he possesses a sharp, calculating mind and frightening leadership abilities. He is a serious and direct individual who disdains frivolity, viewing all actions through the lens of their strategic value. His loyalty to Shishio is absolute, to the point of religious fervor. This devotion is symbolized by a "baptism of fire," where he willingly subjected himself to Shishio's intense body heat, an act that cemented his belief in his master’s divine right to rule and plunged him into a world of hellish conviction.

Houji’s primary role in the story is that of a supporting antagonist and organizer. Unlike the other members of the Juppongatana, he does not engage in direct duels with Kenshin Himura. Instead, he operates from the shadows, leading logistical operations, gathering intelligence, and managing the group’s resources. His most notable accomplishment is the procurement of the Rengoku, a massive ironclad warship purchased on the black market to serve as Shishio’s mobile base of operations. He is responsible for coordinating the attacks on Kyoto and managing the overall battle strategy, including attempts to eliminate Kenshin.

In terms of key relationships, Houji is one of the individuals closest to Shishio, alongside the warrior Soujirou Seta and the mistress Yumi Komagata. He serves as Shishio’s most trusted advisor, and his high status is a direct result of his relentless competence and ideological alignment with his master.

Houji Sadojima undergoes a notable development as the story reaches its climax, though his arc is one of tragic, self-destructive fidelity. When his god-like image of Shishio is shattered by Kenshin’s victory, Houji is thrown into utter disbelief and despair. Refusing to accept that the strongest man in Japan was defeated, he attempts to detonate the fortress where the final battle took place, hoping to kill Kenshin and erase any proof of Shishio’s defeat, ensuring there would be no victor. After being rescued from the collapsing building by his comrades, he surrenders to the authorities. However, his surrender is not an admission of guilt; it is a calculated plan to use the public court system as a platform to espouse Shishio’s ideals and condemn the Meiji government. When the government denies him a trial, recognizing the danger of his voice, Houji loses all remaining faith in the world and commits suicide in his cell, slitting his own throat and writing a final message in blood vowing to follow his master to hell.

Regarding notable abilities, Houji Sadojima is unique within the Juppongatana because he possesses no notable swordsmanship or superhuman fighting skills. His primary weapons are his intellect and his organizational talent. However, he is also a highly proficient marksman and is typically armed with a rifle, showcasing his skill with firearms. His true strength lies in his capabilities as a staff officer, strategist, and quartermaster, making him the indispensable logistical center of Shishio’s entire revolutionary army.
