Description
Joe Asakura, known as Joe the Condor, serves as the second-in-command and the weapons and marksmanship expert of the Science Ninja Team. His designated codename is G-2. To maintain a cover identity, Joe works as a private race car driver, participating in endurance rallies and stock car competitions, and lives a solitary life in a small trailer that he tows from race to race. He is generally depicted with shoulder-length light brown or ash-blond hair and silver-gray eyes.
Joe's entire existence is shaped by a childhood tragedy. When he was eight years old, his parents, Giuseppe and Katarina Asakura, were assassinated by a Devil Star, an agent of the evil international terrorist organization known as Gallactor. It is later revealed that his father was a high-ranking leader within Gallactor who either fell out of favor or developed a conscience, deciding to defect and seek asylum with the International Science Organization (ISO). He was waiting to meet with Dr. Kozaburo Nambu when he and his wife were killed. Joe was also nearly murdered in the attack but was rescued by Dr. Nambu, who then falsified the boy's death to protect him from Gallactor and took him in for training. For a long time, Joe had no clear memory of the event, but he is driven by a deep-seated and relentless need for revenge against the organization that destroyed his family.
In terms of personality, Joe is defined as a tragic, troubled loner who often seems to be a magnet for disaster. He acts as a direct counterbalance to the team's leader, Ken the Eagle. When Ken is lucid and level-headed, Joe tends to be impulsive, impatient, and furious, always ready for a fight and preferring to take immediate action rather than negotiate. Conversely, when Ken acts irresponsibly or lets his emotions get the better of him, Joe becomes the more stable and sensible presence. His preferred mode of action is to shoot now and improvise the rest, but despite his aggressive and cynical exterior, he is by no means a cold-blooded murderer. Beneath his tough loner facade, he is genuinely friendly and values his place on the team.
His key relationships are defined by friction and deep loyalty. His dynamic with Ken is particularly complex, characterized by frequent arguments over strategy but undergirded by an unbreakable bond of mutual respect and friendship forged through shared combat and childhood experiences. He was rescued and trained by Dr. Nambu, who feels a sense of responsibility for him, a connection that is complicated by Nambu having withheld the full truth about his parents for many years. While he initially clashes with the other members, including Ryu the Swan and Jinpei the Swallow, he ultimately comes to trust them with his life.
Throughout the original series, Joe undergoes significant development. Near the end, he discovers that he has sustained incurable brain damage from an explosion, leaving him with less than a week to live. Knowing his body is deteriorating, he dedicates his final moments to locating Gallactor's hidden base and single-handedly fights through enemy forces to relay its position to his team, ultimately sacrificing himself. Though he is presumed dead, he returns in the sequel series, Gatchaman II, having been revived as a powerful cyborg by an ex-Gallactor scientist. This transformation further affects his personality, leading him to view himself more as a combat machine and to act with even greater recklessness in his determination to protect his teammates and destroy Gallactor.
Joe is a top-class marksman, and his unique combat style, known as Condor-style Kagaku Ninpo, involves acrobatic movement while using a wide array of projectile weaponry. His signature weapon is the feather shuriken, a white, razor-sharp dart that every team member carries but which becomes Joe's trademark. He also wields a multi-purpose pistol that can fire bullets, deploy a grappling cable, or function as a drill. He is highly skilled at throwing knives and darts and is proficient at hot-wiring vehicles to escape tricky situations. In his transformed Birdstyle, his condor-based suit grants him enhanced agility and endurance, and he can use his feathered cape to glide through the air. His personal vehicle is a highly modified race car, which serves as his primary mecha in battle and is armed with heavy weaponry like Gatling guns and missiles.
