Description
ISO Agent 2, more fully known as Getz, Hawk Getz, or Getz the Hawk, is a minor but narratively significant character introduced in the sequel series Gatchaman II. His role is defined by tragedy and irony, as he is the would-be successor to a legendary hero who never gets the chance to serve. Getz is an agent of the Earth Defense Force, operating under the authority of the International Science Organization, the same global body that commands the Science Ninja Team. He is handpicked by the ISO to become the new G-2, the second-in-command of the team, taking the place of Joe the Condor, who was believed to have died in the final battle of the original series.
The background of Getz is established through brief flashbacks and dialogue, painting a picture of a capable and experienced operative. Prior to the events of Gatchaman II, he had successfully completed several spy missions for the Earth Defense Force, including a notable operation on Easton Island, which later becomes the site of a trap set by Galactor. His credentials were strong enough to warrant a recommendation from the ISO to Dr. Nambu, despite the original team's deep reluctance to replace their fallen comrade. However, this potential is extinguished before it can be realized. On his way to join the team at their secret base, Getz is intercepted and fatally wounded by agents of the terrorist organization Galactor, who had sought to recruit him as a spy. After his refusal to betray the ISO, they kill him and send a double in his place to infiltrate and destroy the Science Ninja Team from within.
Very little of the real Getz is directly seen, and his personality is largely inferred from his final moments. He demonstrates a grim, nihilistic acceptance of his own fate, suggesting a weary and hardened worldview likely born from a life of dangerous espionage work. Despite this resignation towards his own death, his actions reveal a core of profound loyalty and selflessness. His dying concern is not for himself but for two things: ensuring that the Science Ninja Team does not walk into the Galactor trap set by his impostor, and that a personal token of his love is delivered to his fiancée, a woman named Mako. This brief encounter shows him to be a man of few words, direct and to the point, valuing duty and personal connection even in the face of oblivion. It was his steadfast loyalty to the side of good, explicitly refusing Galactor's offer to become a spy, that directly led to his murder.
Getz's role in the story is almost entirely as a catalyst. He is the "man who never was." His primary narrative function is to create a point of tension and mystery in the opening arc of Gatchaman II. The team is introduced to his aggressive and condescending impostor, whose behavior immediately sows discord. The revelation that the arrogant and treacherous team member was a fake only serves to highlight what might have been. The real Getz's major contribution to the plot happens after his death, through his sole significant relationship with the man who was supposed to be his teammate, Joe the Condor. In a final act of trust, the dying Getz gives Joe a necklace, intended as a gift for Mako, and warns him about the Galactor plot. This brief but pivotal exchange reconnects Joe to the living world and provides him with a personal mission that runs parallel to the team's larger battle. Joe later delivers the necklace to a heartbroken Mako, who had been tricked by Galactor into believing Joe was her lover's killer, resolving a final piece of the imposter Getz's cruel legacy.
In terms of development, Getz is a static character; his brief arc is one of tragic finality. He is introduced and concluded within the same tragic circumstance, with his potential for growth cut short. The only notable ability attributed to him is his skill as a secret agent, implied to be of a high enough caliber to be considered a suitable replacement for one of the world's most elite fighters. He has no special weapons or transformations shown, as he dies before ever donning the Bird Style uniform of the Science Ninja Team. Ultimately, Getz serves as a somber reminder of the human cost of the war against Galactor, a promising hero whose only legacy is a warning and a gift of love passed on by another. He is a symbol of thwarted potential, his entire impact on the story defined by his absence and the shadow of the Galactor agent who stole his face and his future.
