Description
Giorgio Asakura, originally named George Asakura, is a central character known as G-2 or Joe the Condor, serving as the second-in-command, marksman, and weapons expert for the Science Ninja Team. His past is marked by tragedy, as he witnessed the murder of his parents, Giuseppe and Katarina Asakura. They were scientists and members of the terrorist organization Galactor who were killed when they attempted to defect. Rescued by Dr. Kozaburo Nambu, the young boy’s death was faked, and he was given the new name Joe to protect him from Galactor, a secret even Nambu did not fully understand at the time. This event fuels his deep-seated need for vengeance.

Physically, Joe is depicted as tall with a lean build, dark ash blonde hair, and blue eyes. His civilian attire often consists of a shirt bearing the number 2, bellbottom jeans, and driving gloves, reflecting his cover occupation as a private race car driver who lives a solitary life in a camping trailer. His Bird Style uniform is a condor-themed burgundy bodysuit with dark blue gloves and boots, complete with a feathered cape and a black helmet with a violet-grey visor.

Joe possesses a personality that is markedly more headstrong and cynical than his teammates. He is always ready for a fight, often advocating for brutal force and impulsive action rather than strategy or negotiation. Despite this rough and loner exterior, he is genuinely friendly deep down and values his place on the team. His dedication to his mission is absolute, extending to a willingness to sacrifice his own life to destroy Galactor, a drive that only intensifies after he learns he is living on borrowed time.

His role in the story is defined by his position as the team's primary gunner, typically responsible for launching the God Phoenix's missiles at the first sign of a threat. He frequently acts as a counterbalance to the team leader, Ken Washio, with their differing approaches leading to arguments even as a deep mutual respect and friendship grows between them. Another key relationship is with his guardian, Dr. Nambu, whom Joe consults often, especially regarding his parents and tactical advice. Throughout his journey, Joe is defined by immense suffering and resilience. He discovers he has incurable brain damage from a past explosion, which is slowly killing him. In the finale of the first series, his body deteriorates, yet he fights on, ultimately interfering with Galactor's doomsday device. Presumed dead, he returns in the sequel series, Gatchaman II, having been revived and transformed into a cyborg by an ex-Galactor scientist. This new form grants him superhuman strength and endurance but requires recharging and carries the terrible burden of a bomb implanted near his heart, making him feel more like a machine than a man.

Joe’s notable abilities stem from his expertise in Science Ninja Techniques, specializing in projectile weaponry. His signature weapon is the feather shuriken, a razor-sharp dart he wields with incredible accuracy. He is also proficient with a grappling-hook pistol and thin wires. Beyond combat, he is a skilled mechanic and a top-class race car driver.
