Description
Kei Ayamine is a central character across different timelines. In the peaceful world of Muv-Luv Extra, she is portrayed as a quiet delinquent with a free-spirited and somewhat selfish nature, preferring to keep to herself and skip class to spend time on the school rooftop. She often communicates in brief, blunt remarks to deflect conversation and tease others, and she has a noted obsession with yakisoba bread. In this setting, she has a particularly antagonistic relationship with the strict class president, Chizuru Sakaki, and often provokes her for her own amusement.
In the war-torn realities of Muv-Luv Unlimited and Muv-Luv Alternative, Kei is a cadet in the 207th Training Unit, where she is training to become a pilot of a Tactical Surface Fighter, a large mechanical weapon used to fight an alien threat known as the BETA. Her personality remains largely consistent: she is taciturn and tends to handle things her own way, which continues to cause friction with Chizuru, who is her squad leader and is very rigid and by-the-book. Kei is particularly skilled at close-range combat, a talent that makes her well-suited for the Storm Vanguard position within the squad.
The primary source of Kei's conflict with authority and her deep-seated motivations stem from her family's past. Her father was a famous army general who was forced into a no-win situation during an operation. To protect fleeing citizens, he abandoned his own comrades, an act for which he was accused of desertion under fire and given a dishonorable discharge. This event brought shame upon the Ayamine family, and Kei struggles with the belief that her father was a traitor while also questioning if he had a valid reason for his actions. This trauma shapes her core belief that serving under an incompetent leader leaves only two terrible options: to flee or to be annihilated. Consequently, she is highly critical of Chizuru's leadership, often clashing over Chizuru's inflexibility with battle plans.
Kei's role in the story deepens significantly during the coup d'état arc in Muv-Luv Alternative. It is revealed that she has a past connection to the rebel leader, Naoya Sagiri, who was once like a son to her father and was supposed to marry her. She had been receiving unopened letters from him, and his uprising forces her to confront her feelings of guilt and regret, as she believes reading his letters sooner might have prevented the bloodshed. This event is a major part of her development, as she begins to open up to her squadmates and learns to trust them with her life, eventually developing a stronger, more respectful friendship with Chizuru. As a pilot, she is noted for her proficiency with the Type-94 Shiranui and later the Type-00 Takemikazuchi, specializing in close-quarters combat where her skills are most effective.
