TV-Series
Description
Cikapasi is a young Ainu boy who originally comes from the same village, or kotan, as the main character Asirpa, located in Hokkaido, Japan. He is an orphan, having lost his parents and older siblings to smallpox, a tragedy that has left him under the care of the village elders. This loss is central to his character and is the primary motivation for his actions throughout the story.
In terms of personality, Cikapasi is a curious and impressionable child who often reacts with amazement to the impressive feats of the adult characters he encounters. Despite a tendency to be a loner who does not always play with other children his age, he has a strong desire for connection and a family of his own. This desperate need for belonging is a key driving force, pushing him to form attachments to those who show him kindness. Another notable, and often played for humor, aspect of his character is his perverted side. Having reached an age of budding adolescence, he shows a crude and persistent interest in the female body, particularly the breasts of the fortune teller Inkarmat, which he frequently mentions and fixates on.
Cikapasi's role in the story begins when he decides to secretly follow the escaped convict hunter Genjirou Tanigaki and the fortune teller Inkarmat after they leave his village. When Tanigaki discovers him and tells him to return home, Cikapasi refuses, stating that there is no one waiting for him. Inkarmat then suggests they pose as a family to avoid suspicion, a proposal that excites Cikapasi immensely as it fulfills his fantasy of having parents. From this point forward, he becomes a travel companion and a surrogate son to the duo, accompanying them as they search for the other main characters.
His key relationships are thus with Tanigaki and Inkarmat, whom he sees as father and mother figures. He develops a particularly strong bond with Tanigaki, growing to love him as a guardian and mentor. Cikapasi also actively tries to bring the two adults together as a real couple, further cementing his ideal of a family. He forms another significant bond later in the story with a young Karafuto Ainu girl named Enonoka, to whom he makes a promise to return.
Throughout his journey, Cikapasi undergoes noticeable development. Starting as a lonely, passive boy who follows others, he gradually gains confidence and capability. He learns from the adults around him, becomes eager to help in hunts, and demonstrates a growing sense of initiative. By the end of his arc, he is given a rifle by Tanigaki and told to stand on his own, leading to him choosing to stay behind with Enonoka to start a new life, signifying his transition from a dependent orphan to a more self-reliant individual.
As for his abilities, Cikapasi is not a fighter, but he shows an aptitude for and strong interest in hunting, often assisting the adults during their hunts. He also proves to be resourceful and resilient, capable of enduring harsh conditions, as seen during a blizzard in Karafuto where he helps to build a makeshift shelter. He participates in a circus performance as part of a spinning top act and assists with a fake seppuku performance, showing his willingness to help with various tasks. His name, Cikapasi, has a double meaning in the Ainu language: it can either mean "he who makes birds fly" or have a more vulgar, phallic connotation, a fact that the series uses for its characteristic brand of humor.
