Description
Koji Ishida is a deeply indebted middle-aged man who enters the world of the Teiai Group's deadly gambling games to pay off the debts of his wife and son. He first meets the protagonist, Kaiji Ito, on the ship Espoir during the Restricted Rock Paper Scissors game, where Kaiji saves his life on a whim. This act of kindness forges a powerful and lasting bond between them.
Ishida is characterized by his timid, trusting, and fundamentally kind nature. He is weak-willed and lacks the cunning or ruthlessness of the other debtors, making him an average victim of a predatory system. Deeply motivated by love and a sense of duty toward his family, he accepts the risk of terrible consequences to try to secure their future. Despite his fearfulness, he possesses a quiet integrity and a capacity for genuine loyalty.
In the story, Ishida serves as a tragic supporting figure and a moral anchor for Kaiji. He develops a paternal affection for Kaiji, and their relationship is defined by mutual respect and trust. As a failed participant on the Espoir, Ishida is sent to forced labor but later agrees to take part in the Human Derby tournament at the Starside Hotel. There, he wins a significant sum of money, but his journey culminates in the Electrified Steel Beam Crossing.
During the crossing, Ishida's terror overwhelms him. Recognizing his own limitations, he entrusts his winnings to Kaiji, begging him to save his family. As he is unable to cross the beam, and knowing that a scream from him would shake Kaiji's concentration and likely doom them both, Ishida chooses to remain absolutely silent as he falls to his death. This final act of courage and selfless composure is his most defining moment. It deeply scars Kaiji but also inspires him, leaving a permanent emotional mark that drives Kaiji forward in his later struggles. Ishida's greatest strength is not in strategy or gambling but in his profound capacity for silent, dignified sacrifice, a resolve that reveals itself only at the very end of his life.
