Description
Mayu Taneda is the central female character from the story Boku no Hatsukoi o Kimi ni Sasagu. She is the only child of Dr. Takahito Taneda, a prominent cardiologist. She was born on January 11, has blood type B, and stands 168 cm tall with a weight of 46 kg. Her family consists only of her parents, and she is an only child.

Mayu met Takuma Kakinouchi when she was a young girl visiting her father’s hospital, where Takuma was being treated for a serious heart condition. They quickly became close friends. One day she overheard her father telling her mother that Takuma’s illness meant he would not live past the age of twenty. Distraught by this news, she asked Takuma to make a promise: when they both turned twenty, he would marry her. This promise became the anchor of their relationship.

As she grew older, Mayu developed a strong, determined personality. She is described as strong-willed, intelligent, and capable. She is also quick-tempered and can be blunt, but underneath she is caring, selfless, and forward-looking. When Takuma tried to distance himself from her in junior high school out of a desire not to hurt her, Mayu refused to let him go. She studied extremely hard to enter the same elite high school he chose, believing he was trying to leave her behind. She not only passed the entrance examination but also earned the position of first‑year student body representative, delivering a speech in front of the entire school to publicly scold Takuma and declare that he could not abandon her.

Her role in the story is that of the unwavering romantic lead who refuses to give up on her first love, even in the face of his fatal prognosis. She supports Takuma through his hospital stays and emotional withdrawal, constantly fighting to stay by his side. When another boy, Kou Suzuya, develops feelings for her and asks her to date him, she firmly refuses, stating that she loves Takuma more than anyone else. She also experiences jealousy when Takuma spends time with a fellow patient named Teru Uehara, but she ultimately recognizes that Takuma’s kindness toward others does not diminish his love for her.

Mayu’s key relationships include her bond with Takuma, which defines her entire emotional arc. Her father serves as both a parental figure and Takuma’s doctor, creating a natural connection between the families. With Kou, she maintains a clear boundary but is later deeply conflicted when she learns that Kou’s heart could be the transplant that saves Takuma’s life after Kou is hit by a train. She initially tries to hide the donor’s identity from Takuma, and later begs Kou’s family repeatedly to allow the donation, though they ultimately refuse.

Throughout the story, Mayu shows remarkable growth. She transforms from a child who made a naive promise into a young woman who actively pursues her own future alongside Takuma, despite knowing his life will be short. She displays resilience, bravery, and a refusal to let fear dictate her choices. After Takuma dies following a brief period of recovery, she carries out their childhood promise in her own way by borrowing his ashes and holding a wedding ceremony at a church.

Mayu’s notable abilities include her academic excellence, which allows her to enter a top‑tier high school and achieve the position of student representative. She is physically healthy and energetic. Her emotional strength and loyalty are her defining traits, enabling her to endure the painful reality of loving someone with a terminal illness while still finding joy in the time they have together.
