Description
Masaru Hyodo is a supporting character in Beck, first introduced as a student in the same middle school as the protagonist, Yukio Tanaka. He serves as the primary instigator behind the bullying that Koyuki endures during his early school days, embodying a hostile and controlling demeanor. Hyodo is arrogant and behaves in a domineering manner, often allying with another student named Rikiya to target Koyuki. His motivation stems from a perception that Koyuki is overstepping the established social hierarchy by gaining confidence, which Hyodo views as a challenge to his own status. Despite his unpleasant personality, Hyodo is a talented guitarist with fine technical skill, having learned from a background rooted in music. His father was a famous guitarist who played in the 1980s band Baumkuchen, but following his parents’ divorce, Hyodo uses his mother’s surname, highlighting a distance from his father’s legacy. His playing is characterized by mechanical precision, but it lacks genuine emotional depth, a flaw pointed out by Ryuusuke Minami. Over the course of the series, Hyodo’s attitude toward Koyuki gradually softens, and he shows signs of improvement in his interactions. As a supporting figure, his role primarily revolves around being an antagonist early on, but his later development reflects a more tempered disposition. His notable abilities center on his guitar skills, which are technically sound yet devoid of the passion that defines the core musicians in the story.
