Description
Fennel, who is also known as the main antagonist Godatz, is a central character in this story. His public identity is that of the Captain of the Imperial Guard for the CooKingdom, where he appears as a serious and dedicated official. He was once a diligent student under a master named Ginger, alongside whom he spent considerable time learning and eating. He was also a childhood friend and colleague of both Rosemary and the man who would later be known as Cinnamon, forming close bonds with them in their youth, such as when he shared a rice ball with Cinnamon.
This calm and dutiful exterior, however, masks his true nature as Godatz, the greedy and ruthless leader of the Bundoru Gang. His primary motivation is to steal all Recipeppi in order to hoard every type of cuisine for himself. Deep down, Godatz is an empty person devoid of happiness, driven by a lack of gratitude and a powerful inferiority complex. His villainous personality shows no care for the well-being of his own subordinates, viewing them as disposable tools for his goal.
The origin of this duality lies in Fennel's past. His jealousy was ignited when his master Ginger chose Cinnamon over him. This resentment grew even stronger when Ginger decided to split a Special Delicious Stone between him and Rosemary, an act that made Fennel feel overlooked and unappreciated. His feelings worsened significantly after Ginger passed away, leaving him with unresolved issues of inadequacy and a desperate, twisted need to prove himself. He carries a half of Ginger's Delicious Stone as a pin, a constant reminder of his master and the source of his envy.
In the story, Fennel initially acts as an ally, providing the Energy Fairies to Rosemary to aid in the mission to recover the Recipe-Bon. He even takes on an apprentice named Cerfeuil, whom he guides and eventually expresses pride in when she shows courage. However, he is secretly commanding his subordinates, such as Gentlu and Secretoru, from the shadows. He is capable of great cruelty, using dark powers to brainwash victims and erase their hearts, as he attempted to do with Gentlu. His true nature is finally revealed on Christmas day in Oishiina Town, after he is shown kindness by the main character Yui, which only serves to deepen his sorrow before he unveils his plan.
Throughout the narrative, his key relationships are defined by his insecurities. He is ultimately an antagonist to the Pretty Cures and Black Pepper, whom he attacks mercilessly. His relationship with Rosemary is complex; they are colleagues who exchange information, but Fennel has secretly been jealous and angry at him for a long time. When he finally confronts the heroes, he fuses his two Delicious Stones to transform into a gigantic, unstable purple cat monster in a desperate attempt to achieve his goals, at the expense of his own health.
His development culminates in his defeat and purification by the Cures. After being separated from the unstable stone and reverting to Fennel, his inner child-like sorrow emerges. He confesses his belief that Ginger ignored him, but he is ultimately shown a different perspective. Following his defeat, Fennel is taken into custody in the CooKingdom and is shown performing community service alongside his former subordinates, indicating the beginning of his path to change and atonement. His notable abilities include summoning a Gossori Ubauzo using stolen Recipeppi and his container, as well as the capacity to corrupt the hearts of others and turn them into blind followers. He is distinct as the only member of the Bundoru Gang who does not wear a mask and the only one to transform himself into a monster.
