Description
Kohei Kanzaki is a detective at the heart of the Sky High story, appearing most prominently in the live-action film adaptation. He is initially introduced as a dedicated officer investigating a series of gruesome murders in which young women are killed and have their hearts removed. On the day of his wedding, his fiancée, Mina Saeki, becomes the killer's latest victim, an event that completely redefines his character.
Kanzaki is defined by his strong sense of justice, which is quickly overtaken by overwhelming grief and a burning desire for vengeance. His primary motivation becomes stopping the murderer, Tatsuya Kudo, and avenging Mina. He is willing to abandon his moral code, his safety, and even risk his eternal soul to achieve this goal, revealing a personality of intense determination and desperation.
He acts as the primary living protagonist, with his earthly quest for revenge running directly parallel to Mina's spiritual journey in the afterlife. While Mina is forced to decide how to spend her eternity, Kanzaki actively pursues a course of action that would condemn him to hell, creating the story's central dramatic tension.
The defining relationship in his life is with Mina Saeki, a bond of love so powerful it persists beyond death. He is contrasted deeply with his nemesis, Tatsuya Kudo, as both men are driven by love for a woman and are willing to commit terrible acts, making them dark mirrors of one another. Kanzaki also works alongside fellow detective Kazuo Kishi, drawing him into the escalating supernatural conflict.
Kanzaki's development is characterized by a descent from a principled officer into a man prepared to commit the ultimate transgression. His most desperate act involves taking his own life to cross into the realm of the dead and confront Kudo directly, an action from which he is eventually revived. His notable abilities include standard police detection and combat skills, but his most significant trait is his unyielding willpower, which allows him to force his way into the supernatural elements of the world to pursue his objectives.
