Description
Dr. Kyudai Garaki, also known by the alias Daruma Ujiko, is an elderly villain and the mastermind scientist behind many of the most sinister operations in the world of My Hero Academia. He first appears as a seemingly benign, mustached doctor wearing distinctive large, round glasses. His physical form is that of a frail, bald older man, which belies his exceptional longevity and sharp intellect. In his youth, Garaki was a respected researcher, but his background is rooted in a controversial scientific theory that would eventually shape his entire life's work and villainous turn.

Garaki's personality is a complex mixture of eccentric scientific pride and profound, unwavering loyalty. He is a man driven by intellectual obsession, referring to his monstrous creations, the Nomu, as his children or masterpieces and taking immense pride in his work. He is extremely cautious and secretive, going to great lengths to conceal his true appearance and activities, preferring to communicate through electronic devices or intermediaries. Despite his terrifying experiments, he can display a childish glee when his projects succeed and genuine sorrow when his Nomu are destroyed. His allegiance is not born from a desire for chaos, but from gratitude and devotion to the one person who validated his life's theory when no one else would: All For One.

The central motivation for Garaki's actions stems from his personal history as the original proponent of the Quirk Singularity Theory. Approximately seventy years before the main storyline, he predicted that as generations of Quirk users interbred, their powers would become too immense, complex, and uncontrollable, leading to an inevitable societal collapse. The scientific community rejected and ridiculed his ideas, leaving him an outcast. It was at this low point that All For One found him, accepted his theory, and offered him a purpose. This single act of belief inspired a lifelong debt of loyalty. Garaki dedicated his existence to proving his theory correct and serving All For One’s ambitions, believing his master to be the only one capable of navigating the coming chaos.

In the story, Garaki serves as the chief medical and scientific officer for the League of Villains and the Paranormal Liberation Front. His most significant role is the creation of the Nomu, artificial humans bio-engineered with multiple Quirks to serve as mindless soldiers. To facilitate his research, he established a public facade as the respected founder and chairman of Jaku General Hospital. Under the guise of community healthcare, he built a network of orphanages and hospitals across the country, which he secretly used to collect, screen, and experiment on suitable test subjects. He also provides critical medical support, having healed All For One from the near-fatal injuries inflicted by All Might. His expertise becomes the key to the villain's ultimate plan, as he undertakes a months-long procedure to modify Tomura Shigaraki's body, enabling him to safely inherit the original All For One Quirk and become the ultimate vessel for the mastermind's will.

Garaki's key relationships define his entire arc. His bond with All For One is the most significant; he is not merely a servant but a genuine friend and partner who has worked alongside him for over a century. He loyally accepts Tomura Shigaraki as his master's successor, though his trust is earned slowly. Initially skeptical of the young man's abilities, he demands that Shigaraki prove himself worthy of his support by taming the colossal Gigantomachia. After Shigaraki succeeds, Garaki transfers his full devotion to him, stating he has only continued living for the sake of aiding the new lord of evil. His other notable relationships include that of a creator to his Nomu, such as Johnny and Mocha, whom he mourns as friends, and a bitter connection to the hero Present Mic, whose friend Oboro Shirakumo became the basis for the Nomu Kurogiri. In a twist connecting the narrative full circle, it is revealed that Garaki is the same doctor who diagnosed a young Izuku Midoriya as Quirkless, placing him at the very origin of the hero’s journey.

Throughout the story, Garaki shows little personal development in terms of morality or ideology, remaining steadfast in his fanatical scientific dedication. His transformation is purely in his status and role, moving from a shadowy hidden asset to the front lines of the conflict, and ultimately being exposed and defeated. During the Paranormal Liberation War arc, the heroes raid his laboratory at Jaku General Hospital. Despite deploying his High-End Nomu to protect the facility, including a decoy created by Twice, the heroes manage to corner him. Pro Hero Mirko destroys his lab and his means of escape, and Present Mic personally apprehends him, avenging the fate of his friend. At the end of his arc, the once untouchable doctor is defeated and taken into custody, his legacy being the completion of Shigaraki's transformation and the unleashing of the very Singularity he predicted.

Garaki's notable abilities lie entirely in his genius-level intellect and scientific prowess rather than physical combat. He has mastered the processes of Quirk duplication, transplantation, and biological modification, creating the Nomu and replicating the powerful All For One Quirk itself. He also reverse-engineered the Quirk-Destroying Drug by analyzing Eri's Rewind Quirk. His own personal Quirk is known as Life Force. This ability doubles his vitality and lifespan, allowing him to live well over a century while maintaining a relatively stable physical condition. Its great weakness is that this extended life comes at the cost of his athletic ability, leaving him with a frail body and minimal combat capability, forcing him to rely entirely on his Nomu or allies for protection in a direct confrontation.
