Description
Lev Haiba is a first-year student at Nekoma High School and a middle blocker for the volleyball team. He is of mixed Russian and Japanese heritage, born and raised in Japan, and does not speak Russian. His name means lion in Russian. Lev stands at approximately 194 centimeters with long limbs, gray hair, and green cat‑like eyes. He started playing volleyball only after entering high school, which is why he was a bench player during Nekoma’s first match against Karasuno and did not appear at that time. He is the younger brother of Alisa Haiba. Lev has a cheerful, childish, and playful personality. He often jokes about the short stature of others, such as Hinata Shoyo, and his appearance with piercing eyes makes him seem more intimidating than he actually is. Despite his bluntness, he means no harm and adopts a lighthearted attitude toward most things. He is enthusiastic about spiking and becomes excited easily, showing a strong competitive streak toward players he finds interesting. His primary motivation is to improve his volleyball skills and become the ace of the team, a title he proudly claims even though he is a middle blocker. Lev’s role in the story is to inject fresh energy into Nekoma and serve as a contrast to Karasuno’s Hinata: both are first‑year middle blockers, but Lev relies on natural height and instincts while Hinata compensates with hard work and speed. His key relationship is with setter Kenma Kozume, who acts as an informal mentor and balances Lev’s exuberance with calm strategic thinking. He also forms a playful rivalry with Hinata, as they share similar aspirations. Throughout the series, Lev develops from a raw novice into a more reliable player. He gains valuable experience during matches, learns to apply tactical awareness, and gradually values teamwork alongside his individual ambition. His notable abilities include exceptional height, reach, natural intuition, and agility, which make him an effective blocker and attacker. However, he initially lacks technical refinement and must learn to channel his raw talent through practice and cooperation. By the time of the Dumpster Battle against Karasuno, Lev has become a solid contributor to Nekoma’s lineup, using his growing understanding of the game to aid his team in the critical national championship match.
