Description
Rantaro, whose full name is Rantaro Inadera, is the main protagonist of the Nintama Rantaro anime, and the same character appears in the live-action films released internationally under the title Ninja Kids!!!. In the story he is a first-year student at the Ninjutsu Academy, the school where the series' young characters train to become ninjas.

Rantaro comes from a very ordinary family of ninjas. His father, like his ancestors before him, worked as a low-ranking and undistinguished ninja, and the family has long been considered a common and nameless one in the ninja world. Tired of this unremarkable heritage, Rantaro's parents send him to the Ninjutsu Academy in the hope that he will break the pattern and rise to become one of the best and most elite ninjas. This goal is the foundation of his time at the school and gives him a clear sense of purpose from the very beginning.

In terms of personality, Rantaro is honest, cheerful, and friendly. He is kindhearted and genuinely caring toward the people around him, and he is always willing to lend a hand when someone needs help. This side of him fits naturally with his membership in the school's Health Committee, through which he looks after classmates who are sick, tired, or injured. He is also an earnest and obedient student. He is not portrayed as a natural genius, and he learns slowly at times, but he compensates with steady effort, and he is the only member of his main friend group who never neglects his homework. His trusting and somewhat naive nature often leads him into trouble, and he frequently finds himself caught up in chaotic situations alongside his friends, much to the frustration of his teachers.

Rantaro's central motivation is his desire to become a skilled ninja who can bring honor to his family. He takes his training seriously even when the results do not come easily, and his determination to improve keeps him going through failures and comical setbacks. Within the larger story, Rantaro serves as the lead character and the emotional anchor of the series. Many episodes are told from his perspective as he and his companions attend lessons, take on missions, and become involved in adventures that range from everyday school mishaps to encounters with rival ninja groups. His role as the viewpoint character helps the audience experience the world of the Ninjutsu Academy alongside him.

Rantaro's most important relationships are with his two best friends and fellow first-year students Kirimaru and Shinbei. The three form a tight-knit trio that is central to the series. Kirimaru is an orphan who supports himself with various part-time jobs and is highly focused on earning money, while Shinbei is gentle and easygoing. Rantaro's earnest and warm personality balances the group, and the three of them rely on each other through both ordinary school days and dangerous situations. His homeroom teacher is Hansuke Doi, and the academy is led by Denzo Yamada; both adults frequently find themselves exasperated by Rantaro and his friends' antics, but they also guide and support the boys in their training. Rantaro's relationship with his parents is also significant, since their hopes for him are the reason he entered the academy in the first place.

Over the course of the long-running series, Rantaro does not drastically change in age or station, but he grows through experience. He gradually becomes more knowledgeable about ninjutsu and more accustomed to the challenges of academy life, while remaining the same optimistic and considerate boy. His bond with Kirimaru and Shinbei deepens as the three face repeated adventures together, and his sense of responsibility matures as he continues his health committee duties and helps those around him.

As for abilities, Rantaro is not shown as exceptionally gifted in the way some of the older or more talented students are. His strengths lie in his diligence, his honesty, and his concern for others. He works steadily to improve his ninja skills even when he is clumsy or slow to understand, and his willingness to cooperate with his friends often proves more valuable than raw talent. His distinctive appearance, including short reddish hair and round glasses, is part of his familiar image, and the glasses are deliberately presented as an anachronistic touch for comedic effect within the series.
