TV-Series
Description
Sana Sunomiya is a supporting character who serves as the president of the art club at Kazehaya High School. As a third-year student, she is a senior to the protagonist, Naoto Hachioji, who is known as Senpai. While officially holding the position of club president, she is semi-retired from regular club activities because she attends a cram school to prepare for the entrance exams of the Tokyo University of the Arts. Standing 171 centimeters tall with an athletic build, she has long, dark purplish-black hair and crimson eyes.
Sunomiya is characterized by her stern, serious, and no-nonsense personality. She approaches art with an intense passion and adheres to a personal philosophy that love is the essential component for creating authentic work. Despite her disciplined demeanor, she possesses an extreme nonchalance regarding nudity, viewing her own body as a tool for artistic expression rather than something to be ashamed of. She frequently disrobes without embarrassment for self-portraits or to feel a connection with nature, which has earned her a reputation as the school's "Ghost of the Pale Woman" due to her habit of nighttime streaking. Her stoic nature often makes it difficult to tell if she is joking, and she has a tendency toward dramatic declarations, especially when discussing matters of art.
Sunomiya's primary motivation is her pursuit of artistic excellence and her goal of entering a prestigious art university. This ambition drives her rigorous study schedule and her dedication to her craft. Within the story, she initially acts as an antagonistic force. Viewing the antics of Hayase Nagatoro and her friends as disruptive, Sunomiya attempts to disband the art club, believing that the protagonist lacks the motivation to maintain it. She proposes an art competition during the school festival, where Senpai must defeat her in a popularity contest to save the club. Although her own entry, a nude sculpture, is disqualified by the disciplinary committee for being too provocative, she accepts the technical loss and submits to the agreed-upon punishment: wearing a playboy bunny suit. Instead of finding the experience purely humiliating, she describes it as creatively inspiring and subsequently adopts the costume for other events, such as a school marathon, leading to her nickname "Bunny-Girl".
Her relationship with Senpai evolves significantly from that of a stern critic to a mentor. She recognizes his artistic potential and becomes a source of encouragement, pushing him to improve his skills and find his own voice. She also plays a key role in acknowledging the connection between Senpai and Nagatoro. While initially hostile to Nagatoro, Sunomiya eventually identifies her as Senpai's muse, the source of the "love" that has improved his artwork. She subsequently supports their relationship, even advising Senpai to ask Nagatoro on a date. Despite hints of possible personal feelings for Senpai, she prioritizes his happiness and artistic growth. Her background includes lifelong practice in kendo, which contributes to her athletic physique and disciplined mindset.
Sunomiya is a highly skilled painter who has been selected for awards in many contests and achieved high rankings in exhibitions. After graduating from high school, she successfully enrolls in the Tokyo University of the Arts. Her cousin, Hana Sunomiya, later joins the art club, allowing Sunomiya to remain indirectly involved with the main characters even after moving on to university.
