Description
Harold Attinger is the central human antagonist of Transformers: Age of Extinction. A high-ranking and long-serving officer in the Central Intelligence Agency, his background is defined by decades of service that he felt went largely unrecognized, a resentment that helped shape him into a ruthlessly effective operative.
On the surface, Attinger presents a calm, icy, and controlled facade, but beneath this veneer lies a ruthless and paranoid individual. He is highly observant, cunning, and patient, willing to commit to any lengths to achieve his goals. While he paints himself as a savior of humanity, this crusade is a farce; his motivations are deeply self-serving. He is driven by a desire for both wealth, to secure a comfortable retirement, and for fame and recognition for his deeds. His pragmatism is such that he understands the need to keep his actions hidden from the President of the United States.
Attinger's motivation in the story stems from the devastation inflicted upon Chicago by the Transformers' war. In response, he founded a covert CIA faction known as Cemetery Wind, with the declared goal of wiping out all Transformers to protect mankind. To Attinger, faction allegiance is irrelevant; he sees all alien robots as menaces to be eliminated. His personal philosophy is a stark "us versus them," believing there are no good or bad aliens, only humanity and its enemies.
His role in the plot is that of the primary human instigator. He is the architect of the plan to hunt the Autobots into extinction. To further his mission, he enters into a complex three-way deal with the bounty hunter Lockdown and the CEO of Kinetic Solutions Incorporated (KSI), Joshua Joyce. Attinger agrees to help Lockdown capture Optimus Prime. In return, Lockdown provides Attinger with the Seed, a weapon that transforms organic matter into the metal used to create Transformers. Attinger then gives the Seed to Joyce, who uses it to create man-made Transformers for the military. In exchange, Joyce provides Attinger with millions of shares in KSI, securing his early retirement. This intricate scheme is designed to rid the world of Prime, provide humanity with a controllable army, and personally enrich Attinger.
Attinger has several key relationships that drive the conflict. He considers Lockdown his greatest asset, a non-aligned alien he allies with for mutual benefit, though he likely would destroy him too if he had the resources. His relationship with Joshua Joyce is purely transactional, with Attinger manipulating the ambitious but arrogant businessman as a pawn to achieve his own ends. His field leader, James Savoy, acts as his right-hand man, carrying out his orders to hunt and kill. His primary adversarial relationship is with the inventor Cade Yeager, who discovers and refuses to hand over Optimus Prime. Attinger views Yeager as a traitor to humanity for choosing to protect an alien.
Throughout the film, Attinger undergoes little redeeming development; instead, his desperation and true nature become more apparent. He remains committed to his genocidal cause, even as his plans begin to unravel when Galvatron, the man-made Transformer, rebels. His development culminates in a final confrontation in Hong Kong where, holding Cade Yeager at gunpoint and justifying his actions for his country, he is shot and killed by Optimus Prime, fulfilling the Autobot leader's oath to avenge his fallen soldiers.
Attinger possesses no superhuman abilities but is notable for his human skills. He is a cunning strategist, a patient and observant investigator, and possesses a ruthless, unshakeable will to see his agenda through. His effectiveness comes from his intelligence, his ability to manipulate powerful individuals and organizations, and his complete lack of moral restraint, which allows him to sanction murder, blackmail, and other atrocities in the name of his cause.
