Description
Drift is a former Decepticon who has become an Autobot commando, first appearing in the film Transformers: Age of Extinction. His background as a soldier for the Decepticons is a part of his history he does not hide, but he considers that version of himself to be as dead as the faction's late leader, Megatron. As an Autobot, he seeks to leave that violent past behind and fight for a cause he believes to be just.
In terms of personality, the stand-in version of Drift is characterized by a calm, dignified, and thoughtful demeanor, especially when compared to his more boisterous comrades. He strives to maintain his composure in battle and often takes time to practice swordsmanship or recite haikus that reflect on the events around him. This outward tranquility, however, masks a deeper struggle. Leaving the Decepticons did not automatically erase his inner turmoil, and he remains prone to sudden, manic bouts of aggression if he is startled or provoked, leading him to instinctively attack the source of his fear. To counter this lingering rage, he has taken up meditation to complement his martial discipline.
Drift is profoundly loyal to the Autobot leader, Optimus Prime, whom he deeply respects and refers to as his sensei. He believes that hope is always present as long as Optimus is around and is willing to follow him to the bitter end. In contrast, he has little respect for Bumblebee, viewing him as young and lacking the discipline of a true warrior. Drift expresses his distaste for Bumblebee’s immaturity and leadership abilities openly, believing the younger Autobot brings shame to the group. This difference in philosophy has led to direct physical confrontations between the two.
Within the story of Age of Extinction, Drift is one of the last five Autobots in hiding on Earth after humanity turned against them. During Optimus Prime’s absence, he is disgruntled to find himself under Bumblebee’s de facto command. He is overjoyed at the return of his sensei, seeing it as a renewal of hope. Despite his own violent tendencies, he sometimes advocates for stealth and non-violent solutions, though he readily engages in combat when the situation demands it. He is sometimes partnered with the Dinobot Slug in battle. Over the course of the film, Drift provides valuable intelligence for a mission to infiltrate the human company KSI, uses his helicopter mode to aid in a rescue, and joins the assault on the bounty hunter Lockdown’s ship to free Optimus Prime. He ultimately follows his leader into the final battle in Hong Kong and is assigned by Optimus to watch over the Yeager family after the conflict.
Drift is a Triple Changer, a rare Cybertronian able to assume more than one alternate mode. He can transform into both a black and blue Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse for ground travel and a helicopter for aerial flight. His primary weapons are a collection of ancient swords, which he wields with great mastery and skill as an expert swordsman and hand-to-hand combatant. In addition to his combat prowess, Drift is an intelligent tactician and possesses the ability to project holographic displays from his optics.
