Izou Motobe is a Japanese jujutsu master renowned for his analytical combat approach and extensive martial arts knowledge. He presents as a medium-tall, stocky man with grey hair pulled back from his forehead and brown eyes, typically wearing ordinary clothes but switching to traditional martial attire for fights.
Initially acting as an observer and commentator, Motobe provided insights into unusual fighting techniques. He trained Baki Hanma for a match against Junichi Hanada, fostering a friendly rapport with the young fighter. During this time, Motobe revealed his past defeat by Yujiro Hanma ("The Ogre"), harboring a persistent yet futile obsession for a rematch. In their second encounter, Yujiro easily overwhelmed Motobe despite his preparation, underscoring their disparity.
His Maximum Tournament participation ended in a first-round loss to the sumo yokozuna Kinryuuzan. Employing techniques like the Finger-Grab and various strikes, Motobe was overpowered by Kinryuuzan's strength. Before losing consciousness, he defiantly untied the sumo wrestler's topknot to wound his pride. Following this defeat, Motobe stayed on as a commentator, analyzing matches alongside figures like Kiyosumi Katou and Baki Hanma.
Post-tournament, Motobe incorporated kenjutsu into his skillset. He later joined Gouki Shibukawa to confront the death row convict Ryuuko Yanagi, demonstrating tactical pragmatism by positioning himself near monkey bars to neutralize Yanagi's kusarigama chain.
A significant shift saw Motobe transition from his fixation on Yujiro to a protective role. He challenged the legendary swordsman Musashi Miyamoto to shield other fighters, including Yujiro himself. After defeating Musashi, Motobe expressed empathy for the swordsman's isolation, stating his intent to protect him as well. This protective instinct was previously evident when he urged Doppo Orochi to surrender during Doppo's fight against Yujiro.
Motobe's fighting style, Motobe-ryuu, blends jujutsu with kenjutsu and later incorporates weapons like hooked knives. He is a combat pragmatist, leveraging environmental advantages and diverse techniques over pure physical prowess.
